I’m ending a 9 day wine trip to Germany at the end of May with a day in Frankfurt. I have a ticket to the Opera which finishes about 10:30 that evening. What would be a fun place to go and have a good bite to eat and some great wine for my last night? It would be nice if it’s within walking distance from the New Opera House but cab would be OK too.
I never found much of interest wine wise in Frankfurt, but the bar at Villa Kennedy is nice. It would be a taxi ride I think, but no doubt is open as late as you need.
Thanks Russell
I could settle for good wine. I’ll be drinking great wine the rest of the trip.
I can’t really think of anything wine-related in the center of Frankfurt but then again it’s been a while since I’ve lived there.
My best bet would be a trappisten schnitzel (enormous portion) and beer at the Klosterhof which is one block away from the New Opera (make sure it’s not the Alte Oper, which is not far but still in another part of town). They also have a short wine list: http://www.klosterhof-frankfurt.de/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/weinkarte_2014_02.pdf
The kitchen is open until 11:30pm and it’s one of the rare restaurants in Frankfurt open that late, especially on a weekday.
Hi Guillaume
That actually looks like a good fit. It’s just the kind of old fashioned German food I love but my German friends hate. I can even have some of that wonderful Frankfurter Apfelwein
It’s a no-nonsense place with traditional food and huge portions, and not only for tourists The service can be awfully slow but that’s usually much earlier in the evening.
You could even try a comparative tasting of apfelwein (pur, süss, sauer) but I remember a dark beer that was quite good.
This will be fun.
In all these years I’ve never stayed in the city always at one of the airport hotels before my return flight. The opera is Falstaff, perfect to cap off a wine trip. I’ll swing by the Kleinmarkthalle to see if I can smuggle some sausages home. I am very fond of Muenchner Weisswurst.
