2004 Domingos Soares Franco & Cristiano Van Zeller Azeitão Domini - Portugal, Terras do Sado, Azeitão (9/20/2009)
14.0% alcohol. This is a nice value for a rustic, tasty wine. Dark red color. Nice bouquet of vanilla, black fruit, and a touch of spice. In the mouth, tasty fruit leads the way. Good acidity. Pretty solid back-end structure. A good pizza wine. B+ -
2008 Oscar Brillant Sancerre Les Aubiers - France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre (9/20/2009)
12.5% alcohol. Light yellow color. Really tasty, crisp white. Mineral-laden nose with citrus fruit. In the mouth, lively and refreshing. A touch of sweetness to the fruit, but it’s undercut by the bright minerality and acidity. Terrific, focused, refreshing. Just the perfect kind of wine. A- -
2007 Chateau Ste. Michelle Sauvignon Blanc Horse Heaven Vineyard - USA, Washington, Columbia Valley (9/19/2009)
13.3% alcohol. This is a nice example of a plush and refreshing Sauvignon Blanc. Nice nose of citrus and slate, with a touch of grass. In the mouth, linear but also with a roundness that almost seems like it comes from a touch of residual sugar. But it’s balanced by good acidity, and the fruit carries the day. Solid finish. Very nice. B+ -
2008 Bodegas As Laxas Rías Baixas - Spain, Galicia, Rías Baixas (9/19/2009)
12.5% alcohol. This is a terrific value white. Solid yellow color. Aromatic nose of mineral and fruit, with a slight sweet edge to it. In the mouth, an interesting combination of racy and rounded. It’s a crisp fruit profile, along with a lingering hint of sweetness. Bright acidity. Just lovely and refreshing. B+ -
2007 Novy Family Wines Sauvignon Blanc Judge Family Vineyard - USA, California, Napa Valley (9/5/2009)
13.2% alcohol. No sign of the funky nose like last time. This was just pure and lovely grapefruit and tropical notes on the nose. In the mouth, not bracing but somewhat rounded. Terrific balance and flavor. Good kick of acidity. Long finish. There we go. A-
