Chefs speak in favor of In&Out

“It’s the perfect example of classic American fast food. It satisfies my craving for meat, crisp fries, and their special sauce.” — Thomas Keller, The French Laundry, Yountville, California and Per Se, New York City
Order: Cheeseburger, fries “well done,” and a Diet Coke

“The places are incredibly clean. I’m impressed as hell by that. And whatever’s in that sauce is tasty.” — Charlie Palmer, Aureole, New York City

“It’s fast, it’s hot, there are code words — what’s not to enjoy?” — David Myers, Sona and

I guess this means I can cross those restaurants off my list. [rofl.gif]

Ha! Big time chefs… and they don’t know a thing. Go figure. [shock.gif]

gordon ramsay loves in-n-out too!

“In-N-Out burgers were extraordinary. I was so bad, I sat in the restaurant, had my double cheeseburger then minutes later I drove back round and got the same thing again to take away.”

“I’ve been somewhat obsessed with In-N-Out burgers.”

I seriously don’t get it. And this quote is just ridiculous to me.

“I dare anyone to tell me their burgers aren’t as good as any you’ll fine anywhere, from fast food to fine dining.” — Tyler Florence, host of Tyler’s Ultimate
Order: Double-double cheeseburger “Animal Style”

I can understand folks who say it is the best of fast food joints which to me doesn’t mean a lot. It’s still fast food. But taking it past that is just silly.

Even the people on the wine boards that like the burgers think the fries suck.

I can get with this one. The place was clean! That’s a reason to love it. [rofl.gif]

I eat burgers very infrequently, maybe 1-2x per year. I recently had In N Out for the first time in a while on a road trip to Tahoe.

It is tasty for fast food. You do have to order the fries well done, which we did and even then they taste potato-y but they aren’t great.

The burger was solid but not great.

I’ll stick with my Carl’s Jr. 6 dollar bacon cheese burger. Hmm, cheese, bacon. Like their fries too, but nearly blistered my fingers swiping fries on the drive back to the store. Both I&O and Wendys burgers make me think of Soylent Green.

I retried Five Guys again on Monday night. Still hard to compare prices. Their Double Double equivalent is $8 vs. $3 at In n Out. The fries are great though.

In N Out does one thing and they do it well. Fast food, good and cheap. I like In N Out and if I am going to go fast food for a burger which is when I usually have them (on a road trip) it will be In N Out.

I guess if I decided to have a serious burger somewhere…I would seek out some $15 burger with aged beef or lamb with some exotic mushrooms, aged imported cheese, truffles from Italy, sea salts from France, etc.

I’m also in the Carl Jr’s camp (if I have the choice in this price range that’s probably where I’ll go) but I&O burgers are way above Wendy’s - W is a at the bottom with McDonald’s, from what I’ve tried. I’d have to produce full rankings of my experiences but when I’m in a fix I usually go to Sonic, they are all over the Southwest and in the not great not bad zone.

I love the fries! You just have to eat them right when you get them.

My preferred combo would be I&O burger paired with McD fries.

That’s becuase you are used to fries with sugar and fat. A buddy of mine was a cost accountant for a company that makes most of the fries used by restaurants in the US. Different specifications for different products, but they add sugar and fat into the fries during the production process before freezing. That’s why some people rave about certain fries, becuase there is a little bit of sugar and fat all the way through them.

The In-n-Out are made with fresh potatos.

Nothing wrong with not liking the In-n-Out fries. You are one of many, alot of people have a palate preference for sweets and fats. That’s why most fries are made that way.

What Peter said. I love In-n-Out fries. They actually taste like potatoes! I prefer them well done but I think they are close to crispy enough when regular plus they are not mealy on the inside like many other fries are.

For those talking about McD’s, Wendy’s, Carl’s, etc keep in mind those places don’t have the centralized control over their food the way In-n-Out does. They keeps it fresh where the other big fast food joints are usually ugly examples of big production food gone wrong.

There is no equivalent for a fresh cut FF. Mcain is the super potato processor that sells frozen FFs to most of the fast food chains in the world. Sugar keeps you coming back for more, but sugar is the white man’s evil voodoo.

Thanks! This makes total sense as I was thinking the folks that don’t like In n Out fries are a bunch of sugar fiends with unsophisticated palates [pillow-fight.gif]
