Was just cleaning up the cellar and making sure CellarTracker was up to date. My cellar generally is CDP heavy, but not the case anymore. I ran a few reports and noticed that almost 50% of my cellar is from the wine region I live in, the Santa Cruz Mtns. That really surprised me. For those who live in a wine region, I’m curious what % of your cellar is from where you live?
We don’t live in wine country per se (yet) but live 90 minutes to Santa Ynez. Used to go at least eight times a year. At that time SB County wines were more than half the cellar. Now with more lists and many wine friends in Napa and Sonoma their wines predominate.
You buy what’s in front of you that tastes good.
I live closest to Temecula wine country and own exactly 0%. On the other hand France is 5000 miles away and it makes up 50%.
Way too much. Hard to resist tho because we trade wine with other winemakers and can generally buy from them at ITB prices so it is hard to pull the trigger on a CdP or BDX for me when I can buy a lot of great wine at really good prices - or in my case I like to have some of the wines that are vineyard-designated from Zenith. The problem is it does give you a “homer” palate. Several years ago Paul Gerrie (owner of Cristom) and I decided we would do a BDX tasting group. We couldn’t find people in Oregon that were very interested or had the wines - Paul has an amazing BDX cellar and mine is respectable. But when we entertain it is sort of thought of as odd if we don’t serve Oregon Pinot. I’m odd, still will drag out stuff from Napa or Washington or BDX or CdP to serve but I don’t get that back from many others except Paul.
Interesting question. I’m an hour away from Niagara Wine Country in Ontario, Canada and your question made me look and calculate the actual percentage of wine country wine I have in my collection. A mere 29.3%, way less than I thought it would be.
What a homer Jeff. Surprisingly only 12.3% of my wines are from the RRV and its my #2 appellation behind Sonoma Coast (15.8%).
Very little directly from Livermore for me. Most of these are bought for short-term consumption and don’t get entered into Cellar Tracker so I can’t even profile it. The Livermore winery I own the most of is La Rochelle which sources Pinot mostly from the Central Coast so I don’t count them as Livermore. Unfortunately the story out here is that over and over you find price exceeds quality, sometimes by a wide margin.
If I could expand to all the appellations around the Bay, it becomes more like 70%.
Edited to add: within a 2-3 hour drive of my house, it’s more like 90%.
Not even counting the house wine… 48% Napa and another 11% Sonoma
Id guess 2% or 3%. Its a shame really.
About 95%. Most of the rest is CA. I have one btl of Amarone–that’s it for furrin’ wine. lol
At least it isn’t Burgundy.
I’m a die-hard locavore. A true believer. A genuine homer.
96% California (4% French mistakes).
Within California, 40% Sonoma, 20% SF Bay, 16% Napa, 14% Central Coast, and another 8% “North Coast.”
So much more satisfying for me to see the vines, kick the dirt, breathe the air and get to know the people who make the wines.
French wine for me is no more than an interesting (and expensive) occasional point of departure.
Interesting question. While I don’t live in wine country now, I have lived near several during my lifetime. When living in Germany, I guess 70-80% of my purchases were German or Alsace wine. While living in Friuli in Italy, it was an easy jaunt to Austria, Piedmonte, and Tuscany. Maybe a third was Friulian, a third Austrian, and the other third Tuscan and Piedmonte. When living near Napa, however, less than half from California and the rest from Europe. Most of my purchases were direct from producers, except for the European wines while living in California.
If I lived in, say Burgundy, I’d probably be 96% Burgundy.
It’s great to be an American!!!
I own 0% South Dakotan wine.
9.89% Washington, and decreasing each year.
Why to support the local economy Matt… Geesh : )
Meant to say “way, not why.” silly me.
Only San Mateo County AVA wine I have is Rhys Family Farm. Aside from that, 60% of my cellar is from sonoma, santa cruz, anderson valley.
48% of mine is from Washington the rest is France, Italy, and Germany.
