Fontaine Universal Wine Stemware

I just received my glasses. Beautiful stems, very well made, and slightly smaller than I was anticipating. I have not used them yet but my first reaction would be perfect for a Sparkling Wine or a Grenache/Syrah.

Picture for comparison. Left to Right:
Fontaine, Zalto Universal, Glasvin Universal, Grassl Liberte, Grassl 1855, and Zalto Bordeaux.

Happy to hear the glass has made a great first impression. Love seeing it next to the rest of your collection.

Also like hearing the note of using it for a sparkling wines. I think many Universal designs particularly struggle with bubbles, so that was definitely a design consideration and testing parameter.

Thanks for sharing!

Just received mine as well. The glasses look lovely (really like the shape) but the weights seem to be quite inconsistent. Two of my six glasses are at the expected mean weight of 95g each and one was about 107g, but the other three range from 118 to 120g each. What’s disappointing and concerning to me is that the rims on the these heavier three glasses are visibly thicker and feel different compared to the lighter ones.

Bryan, you had mentioned that your glasses would fall below 100g with a mean of 95g in an earlier post. What is the standard deviation of your weight distribution based on your testing? For contrasting reference, I measured sets of six of some of my other glasses (GGG, Sophie wald, Zalto) and even though there was slight variations, none had achieved a 15g difference to the left or right of the stated average (maybe I got unlucky here, or lucky with my other glasses!)

Thanks for the kind words about the glass design, and happy to hear it connects with you. The goal was to try to create something unique that balances both modern and classic aesthetics.

Real sorry to hear about the inconsistent weights though. Like you say, there is of course deviation due to the hand-made nature, but I agree +15 grams is definitely considered extreme and not up to our standard. Will reach out directly and get replacements sent out to you!

I also received my four glasses and used them in a tasting on the same day last week. I was very happy with them. I don’t think I would have noticed the weight difference but for what it’s worth mine are between 104g and 114g.

Engineers will be engineers…

Upon some further investigation there was a slight miscommunication about acceptable tolerances between me and production. Tolerances will be immediately tightened next round which is actually happening soon as the first batch is nearly sold out.

And of course if anyone has concerns, just send a PM or reply to your order confirmation and I will personally get you replacements for glasses over 105g.

Stats on 100 glasses I weighed…
05% 89g or less
60% 90g - 100g
20% 101g - 105g
15% Over 106g

Future production is set at 95g +/- 10g… With 85% of production inside 95g +/- 5g.

Even lower weights tighter & tolerances would increase production waste and up retail costs by ~ $5/glass.

2025 UPDATE: New batch of glassware has landed and weights are as expected

Awesome - what did you pour?

Looking forward to seeing more tasting notes from everyone.

Here are notes from Ashish:

Just following up from my last post and confirming the new batch (and future batches) adhere to the tighter weight tolerances of 95 +/- 10g with the vast majority +/- 5g.

Hope everyone has been enjoying the stems so far!

Back for a brief post.
I’ve really liked these glasses and use them several times per week. I find them particularly good for lighter wines and use them for most whites except Chardonnay. Also great for a lot of Italian reds, Etna Rosso, Chianti etc, but again prefer a bigger glass for Barolo and Brunello. Need to test them out on Mature Bdx Burg, CndP of which I have a fair amount but never get around to open.

The Premier Universal

  • Extreme value and Quality-to-Price ratio
  • Lower cost than Gabriel Glas StandArt by 44% (only for BD16!!)
  • Lighter weight than Gabriel Glas StandArt by 20%
  • Same design as our hand-made
  • Thin stem and fine cut rim
  • 100% made in Europe

:shopping_cart: PRICING: Retail will be $29 (half the price of hand-made), but Berserkers get an even better deal.

:gem: PRODUCT SUMMARY: The lightest premium machine-made stemware on the market at an unbeatable price.

My goal for Fontaine has always been achieving BOTH exceptional quality and value.

That’s why these new European machine-made glasses are so. dang. exciting.

At 125 grams, the Fontaine Premier Universal still maintains a “hand-made” feel, I believe. There are only very tiny increases in thickness at the stem 0.5mm (4.5 > 5) and the rim 0.1mm (0.7 > 0.8). Glassware-connoisseur Wine Berserkers will note a weight difference from the hand-made 95 gram Titanium, of course, but I still think will be very impressed.

These are really terrific glasses for anyone who wants both refinement and durability, or for the glassware lover who wants both a hand-made version for special occasions and something a little more casual for the everyday pours. At this price-point you can easily bulk up and have the best glassware for any wine tasting or dinner party.

Your pre-orders are extremely appreciated. For this kind of capital-intensive project, pre-orders really help ensure the glass hits the ground running.

Thanks for supporting Fontaine in our journey of making affordable world-class European glassware.
