Foie ban overturned.

It’s 'bout damn time.

A long delayed victory for common sense. Bravo!

La Toque tonight??? I’m playing soccer this afternoon to work off the calories in preparation. [cheers.gif]

Yay!

fudge yes. good for ken frank and others.

I had foie that the foie ban would be overturned. This is one fois that logic triumphed.

The LA Times has an article up with comments from PETA. Now I’m all for the ethical treatment of animals but this statement is bit over the top, no?

People for Ethical Treatment of Animals slammed the cheering in a statement from President Ingrid E. Newkirk: "Foie gras is French for ‘fatty liver’, and ‘fathead’ is the American word for the shameless chefs who actually need a law to make them stop serving the swollen, near-bursting organ of a cruelly force-fed bird.

“A line will be drawn in the sand outside any restaurant that goes back to serving this ‘torture in a tin,’” it vows. “And whoever crosses that line identifies themselves with gluttony that cannot control itself even to the point of torturing animals.”

Sucks for me because my wife refuses to dine at any establishment that serves foie gras. Basically eliminates all the great restaurants in the city. lame.

and

It should be treated as a seasonal harvest like all other things rather than a year round industrial product.

show her the videos of ducks clamoring to receive gavage.

I’m going to try. These things with her take time. It took a good decade for me to convince her to let me cook meat in the house. For me and the kids I only buy meat from farms that raise the animals as ethically sound as is possible for a farm. We (I) buy pastured beef, chicken, etc. We raise our own chickens for eggs so most of the time we have eggs from 12 happy birds. So, my wife can be pragmatic, but her stubbornness runs deep!

Evan, thanks for these links! Have read the first article so far. Good stuff.

Correct. People need to realize that the Foie Gras was discovered because it is a natural cycle. Gavage is not required when done correctly. That being said, why aren’t folks up in arms about corn finished beef? That diet would eventually kill the cow. A natural cycle foie gras is clearly less intrusive. It’s all ridiculous. Livestock is slaughtered regardless. Don’t want meat? Don’t eat it.

Torture in a tin? I’ve never purchased a whole lobe, but I have a hard time imagining the hudson valley or sonoma product is shipped in a tin. Am I wrong?

No kidding… all this bullshit is just to make one feel better about themselves? seriously… don’t like meat, don’t eat it, but Foie is no worse than farmed fish, chicken, beef, etc…

Vacuum sealed

Yes, uncooked lobes are shipped in vac seals. But lots of stuff en conserve or terrine (both cooked) gets shipped and served in cans or jars. That stuff also gets sold vac sealed by Hudson Valley, but a lot of the French products are sold in tin or glass. They’re not as luxurious but perfectly tasty.

Can’t wait to hit up Jiraffe for their pistachio crusted sear as a last hurrah before they close down.

You’re welcome Rick. I love Foie and have been chastised for it in the past so I like to provide the info to back my side of the story.

BTW the Hudson Valley FG is excellent. The slabs come vacuum sealed as others have mentioned. I have never bought the Terrines.
