I don’t know which of the two to applaud more; they were both exceptional. Probably the steak, which was amongst the finest I’ve ever prepared and consumed.
The Potel Echezeaux paired well. It had grand cru depth and density, and so much ripeness that I had to check to make sure it wasn’t an '03. Chewy, earthy, dark pinot fruit, oak spice, moderate tannins. While we really enjoyed the bottle, at times it felt a little flat (that’s been my reaction to several recent '02 Burgs; maybe it’s just me). Brisk attack and long finish; I’m probably being overly critical of a very nice wine.
