First time to Italy, tips on organizing our itinerary

Glad you liked Francesca! I would use her again in a heartbeat.

  Thanks Zach ! It was you who referred her to us.

Posted my trip experience in its own thread on Wine Talk, thanks for the tips everyone! We’ll definitely be back.

On a separate note: I have a friend who is going to Italy next July for a wedding. They’ll be in Rome for a few days then in Lucca. He enjoys wine but isn’t Berserker-level educated, though interested in learning. Are there any wineries close to Lucca worth visiting?

Enoteca Vanni in Lucca worth recommending, and I think they also do occasional tastings.

Aside from that, there are local wineries, but the closest I know of (and fwiw like) is Cantina Lunae, about 45 mins drive away.

What about near Rome? They aren’t renting a car, so anything that could be accessible by train?

Tenuta Valgiano up in the Lucchesi Hills overlooking the city of Lucca. Only 20 minutes drive from Lucca historic center. Beautiful villa in a serene hillside setting. Ageworthy reds. Requires making an appointment in advance.

A day trip to Orvieto is relatively easy to do, although it’s an almost 2 hour train ride. It’s an interesting, walkable city with a lot of history (popes spent a lot of time here back when being Pope was kind of a death sentence), and they make wine there.
