With growing demand for Burgs, will we ever see First Growth Bordeaux en Premeur for sub $200?
The obvious answer is no, but it could happen. Suppose a collapse of the asian market, and a flight back to the US and Europe for the Chateaus. Any thoughts?
Oh yes - all it will take is a run of ordinary vintages. '02s were sub $200, so if pressure on moving millions of bottles of ordinary 11s, 12s, 13s… builds up then they will have to take that hit
2002 was 11 years ago. It is a completely different world today. It would take a collapse of the world economy for this happen. Current back stock of First Growths would have to slide to under $200 for it to be realistic to see offerings at $200. The price asked for 2012 First Growths, while not cheap was fair to people willing to spend that much on Bordeaux.
I just picked up a 2012 Margaux on the PC weekend sale for $275. That’s pretty darn close, all things considered. (That said, query whether PC will deliver it in my lifetime…)
From PC is entirely different than getting KL or someone else to offer via a negoce at a reasonable level. I don’t buy them. If I could get Cheval for 250 or less, I would. That’s not going to happen, I don’t think. There is too much money over there that will allow the owners to sell less and maintain.
It is unlikely to happen absent an ugly world economy, paired with a couple of relatively weak vintages back to back.
But I definitely disagree with the highlighted sentence. One can routinely buy back vintages of FGs for less than the current offerings and oddly the prices of one market seems to have no impact on prices in the other.
