Financial Times: Chinese fine wine market downturn

Not being in the business, I can’t claim to be knowledgeable about the Chinese wine market. However, my impression based on articles in the last few years has been that China has been an alternative source of revenue for American wineries, and fine wine producers in general.
Now, according to the article, the same market forces causing a downturn stateside are at play there.

Chinese wine market has been down for the last 2 years. Actually, I should say champagne market. Thank God for the US and Scandinavia. Italy is a good friend too :slightly_smiling_face:.

Disclaimer: I sell champagnes.

It’s an odd and not very significant set of examples – a first growth’s current release second label, and the 2012 vintage (what’s the trading volume for '12 Carruades?). Trophy wines like the Roumier presumably don’t trade much either. And is that the basic Roederer NV Brut?

Classic Gell-man amnesia article.

FT is way behind the curve as usual. Wine market certainly has its issues with weak China demand being one. HK wine market is saturated with bargains as cash strapped mainlanders dispose of trophy portfolios. Every luxury market I touch (art, watches, wine) has been smashed by macro (high interest rates, China downturn) making for a buyers paradise where hard to access wines are freely available at more affordable (not cheap!) prices

I consistently see lowest global WS prices in HK.

I agree these are odd examples, probably as a result of the writer trying to cherrypick for the SKUs with the largest decline in price.

Roederer does make a millesime that sits between Cristal and their NV brut.
