Figeac vertical and wondering about Bordeaux critics

Interesting to see such lack of enthusiasm for the 2018. I tasted it as part of a large vintage horizontal in November 2022, organised by the IMW, and it seemed superb - a cut above the other wines shown (which included LMHB, HB, Cheval, Margaux and various other top chateaux). And I wasn’t the only person there to find it the wine of the tasting - there was a real buzz around the bottles, which generated enthusiastic discussion among the tasters. My rough note, verbatim: “dark and very grown up. raspberry, leafy cigar box. so seductive, such wonderful balance. effortless - sublime. such a pretty finish. mmm”.

By contrast, there were a bunch of wines that showed too hot and could barely be drunk*, but Figeac seemed to handle 2018 really well.

*including SHL,Cheval, Belair-Monange, Troplong, Hosanna, Cos, Beychevelle, Pontet

What a fascinating thread and exchange of info and thoughts. (Well, apart from a little pissiness here and there.)

Thanks, particularly, to William for those fabulously informative posts. I cut my teeth on Bordeaux in the 80s drinking with people who were 10 to 20 years old, but I don’t ever recall hearing about the frost of 1956 or its long-term impact.

I’m all for letting kids try wine, but that’s pretty young for a Bordeaux tasting group!

Albeit young…The '15 was a brutal quaff…Alfert tasted it with me

Ha, and I know who popped it! The man likes them wines baby fresh! At least it wasn’t the 2017 Le Pin again…
