OK, I admit to being a baby killer across the board. What say you on early drinking favorites?
Varietal - CA Pinot Noir.
Regional - Cotes du Rhone
Good question, actually.
I tend to like CA Syrah young, and ‘lesser’ Chablis, but mostly I’d say almost everything CA but Napa/Sonoma Cabs (and now Petite Sirah!!).
I like the CdR and CdP both young and old - don’t mind popping an '05 or '06 even, as it gives a different tasting experience than if it were aged a bit.
Rosé… cheap Riesling QBA from good producers…
Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé (sauv blancs).
Argentine Malbec $10 to $20 range
Zin, most cali pinot, most aussie grenache, most of Spain (priorat excluded).
Did you taste the 1985 Jadon Corton-Charly on Saturday? Let them baby’s age a bit.
I’m a fan of young Zins myself. Sancerre is great young as well.
Zins I prefer with a bit of age on them. '02’s and '03’s, for example, seem to be drinking really well now. However, at our recent tasting at Frank Murray’s house, the Zins (almost all very recent vintages) outshone the Syrahs to me.
Still, with one of my favorite go-to Zinfandels - Scherrer’s OMV Zin - I want them with at least a bit of age. Just a little bit of the secondary characteristics, but still brightness in the fruit
Varietal: Grenache (new world) & Chardonnay (new world)
Region: Beaujolais
I drink very few wines early in their life. Rosés are our most likely early drinkers.
CA Syrah is wonderful when young, it’s hard for me to let them sleep past 6-7 years from Vintage date.
