Favorite "Non-famous" Wineries

Jura - Puffeney

Red Burgundy - Cecile Tremblay & Roblet Monnot

Champagne - Chartogne-Taillet (they’re certainly one of the least-known of Thiese’s portfolio)

Herb Lamb from Herb Lamb isn’t famous, but the Colgin bottling certainly is/was.

RM is a wine board darling.

Good picks. Love the Tremblay wines, she does better than her hubby

Hello everyone,

My first post here; looks like an educated and informed wine discussion forum. That is the kind of place I want to frequent! Anyway, my choices for non-famous wineries in the order they randomly pop into my diseased mind are:

Red Burgundy: Cyprien Arlaud, Pierre Amiot et files, David Clark.
White Burgundy: Alain Chavy, Daniel Barraud.
Northern Rhone: Domaine du Tunnel (aka Stephane Robert), Domaine du Colombier.
Alsace: Meyer-Fonne, Bruno Sorg, Jean Boxler.
Champagne: Cedric Bouchard (aka Roses de Jeanne), Gimonnet, Larmandier Bernier, Diebolt-Vallois.
Loire: Vacheron, Pierre Soulez.
Germany: If Willi Schaeffer and Van Volxem are considered too famous I’ll have to limit myself to Weingut Weiser-Kunstler.
Italy: Cabutto Bartolomeo, Germano Ettore.

There are lots of wines I like from the US as well, but those that make it over here to England are probably wildly well-known in the US. Is Tablas Creek considered famous over there? If not I’ll choose them.

An interesting question, got me thinking.

Cheers,

David.

Hi David. I just had a look at your blog and daresay you will probably find this forum a… I’m going to use the word “salubrious”… environment. Welcome!

Shhhhhhhhhhh…

Welcome, David. Totally agree on Vacheron, Larmandier, Willi Schaefer.

I know I’ve got more but will have to think about which ones are my favorites…

Côte de Beaune - Prince Florent de Merode
St. Emilion - Clos de l’Oratoire
Oregon - Barbara Thomas
Napa - Coho and Ghost Block

i just browsed through your website as well … methinks you will like this place. [berserker.gif]

Many thanks for the greetings, Brian, Alan and Steve. I think I’ll have fun here too.

Cheers,

David.

Buy up while you can, this is going to fall of the thread once it’s labeled as DRC.

Reverie on Diamond Mountain…solid Cab Sauv and excellent Cab Franc

Ghost Horse…

I can’t offer names from every region, but here are a few:

Oregon: R. Stuart & Co.
California: Girard Winery, Unti Vineyards, Dogwood Cellars
S. Rhone and area: Domaine du Vieux Chene (incredible QPR, even by Rhone standards); Domaine Gran Nicolet (sp?)
N. Rhone: Yann Chave
Champagne: Gaston Chiquet

Thanks for the tips from the other posters!

Big Basin, McHenry, Windy Oaks, Stefania, Woodside, Edmunds St. John, Arcadian, Rhys

Fleury, T-Vine (wine maker sold and left), Brophy Clark (Pinots are incredible)

Ghost Horse and Arcadian

Sa many valuable informations ! A great forum here !

I am not taking issue with your choices, but I am curious why you would peg a producer like Rhys as “non-famous” when there is a wait list for its wines. I recognize that Rhys is “board famous” and maybe not so famous in mainstream life, but the wine sells out all of the time. Maybe I am wondering what “non-famous” means to you and the other respondents to this thread more than anything else.
