Favorite Decanters?

Someone gifted me one of these. I gave it away without using it: horribly unstable and fragile.

Absolutely. My daily wine glasses are also IKEA STORSINT 49cl. A good general purpose shape, and very robust. IMO people can get far too precious about wine glasses.

Understood. For what it is worth, there are different models of the same general type and I have a friend that has one that is unsturdy. Mine is quite stable and has lasted about 7-8 years though I do not put it in the dishwasher and would not recommend that as it does have a relatively thin spout. . Because I am only doing a quick decant (less than an hour) and the wine does not stay in as long, it has not picked up wine residue/stains like the ones I use for longer decanting and it is easy to otherwise clean with a rinse and an occasional soap rinse. My favorite part is that once you get used to the angle of the pour, it as drip free as any of the decanters that I have. Pretty good $25 experience for me but I understand that experiences may vary. I just picked up one of the Erlenmeyer flasks mentioned above which I am pretty excited to try for long decanting and Magnum decanting.

I think staining and etching depend on the make-up of the glass. If you’ve ever seen microscope images of glass surfaces, they vary enormously.

A lot of older stemware was vulnerable to dishwasher soaps and etched to a slightly cloudy state. I haven’t had that problem with stemware made in the last 20 years. I’ve also noticed that some decanters stain more easily than others if not rinsed.

That’s a fair point, but I still see it all the time with contemporary stemware up and down the price spectrum.

Interesting. I have oodles of different brands of stems and I run everything through the dishwasher – sometimes failing to rinse them properly at night – and I haven’t experience staining or etching in any glasses I’ve bought in the last 25 years.

I have no idea how they do it!

Sulfuric acid? :flushed:

please forgive me, but I’ve just become aware of my new favorite novelty decanter.

I am happy to see that others also use Erlenmeyer flasks. They are inexpensive, durable, and attractive in their own way…except for when I did a blind tasting of whites and the lineup looked suspiciously like urine samples.

Maybe the decanter could come with a screen. I’ve occasionally set a Vinturi on top of the decanter and poured through it to catch cork bits.

Do people like the double decanters that you can use to decant out of and back into the bottle?

Want to swap a couple of toasters for your decanters?

(Kidding, our wedding was 40 years ago).

I think the concept is a good one, but the one I had never made a good seal on the return to the bottle and I often had spillage issues.
