Farmhouse or Saison ale recs

This is a really weird thread.

[rofl.gif]

Spend time at The Porter and everything will become clear.

Doubtful. But its a great place.

Drank several of these out at the pool over the Summer and thought it was decent. Are you a Saison fan?

So is this a weird thread because? It’s gone in many directions for sure and that’s good.

Scott, Honestly I felt the Uprights where a tad less delineated and complex than what I like in Logsdon. The best Saisons by far this year have been Saison Bretta '14 and '13 by Boulevard. Admittedly they are on the fatter side, but the complexity when aged a few months is comparable to nothing.

Yes. I know Saison. I drink Saison. That, sir, is no Saison. Way too much bitter hop. Seems absurd to me to call that a Saison, which I tend to think of as a fresh and refreshing style of beer. Even something looking to emphasize hop character, like the Dupont dry hopped, presents a much more refreshing and balanced profile. The Stone Saison is all Stone and no Saison IMO. In all fairness I find that par for the course with Stone. Every beer is just a wall of bitter hops, lacking the sort of citric balance I find from producers with a more deft hand. It’s fine at times, but after about half a beer Stone’s offerings always seem an absurd platonic ideal of the 2010, mega-hopped IPA. I find them far less balanced than even other mega-hopped offerings from other producers.

In the case of the Stone Saison I consumed it at a party in August with a variety of Saisons, sours, and miscellaneous others. I had quietly put my almost full bottle on a side table and moved on after attempting to drink a quarter of it. I later discussed it with others and it was universally panned as the worst beer there. In short: I hated it.

Best beers that day were the Brewery Vivant Saison which I absolutely adore; Jolly Pumpkin Calabaza d’Oro which is just such a solid beer; and a 2012 Love Child which showed great.

Obviously it’s a style issue, and as discussed “Saison” casts a wide net. For my taste the Stone offering is just too far outside of what makes a beer a Saison. My opinion is based on the aforementioned bottle, and the competition was stiff. So maybe on its own I wouldn’t mind it as much.

Peter - Thanks for the rec. I have a bottle of the 2014 somewhere. Need to crack that open in the near future.

I believe I said this up thread, but I concur wholeheartedly with Michael on the Stone Saison (and Stone in general). I drank my Stone Saison solo at dinner. Really unpleasant. Others at the table, admittedly not Saison drinkers, agreed it was awful. While by no means a Saison expert, I’ve had enough from the new and old world to say without a doubt that it tasted nothing like any other Saison I’ve had. Served blind I likely would have guessed a poorly made rye IPA. Perhaps I had an off bottle, but I’m not willing to try again to find out.

I wasn’t trying to be testy, just asking. Obviously this is a Stone beer and when drank next to other Saisons you will know that, but it’s not horrible by itself out at the pool. The snarky comments are not well taken with me, Sir!

I don’t think I was snarky at all. And I qualified with an entire paragraph that context was working against it. Not every bit of humor is snark. That beer does blow though.

Ha, I forgot to add the smiley at the end. Cheers Michael!

Scott, I got more of the Boulevard '14, but will also be back for some Logsdon soon. Btw have you tried the Logsdon Flemish Red?

the Far West Vlaming, right? I recall liking the taster I had on two separate occasions at the brewery, but wasn’t crazy about it and definitely would not want to drink a 750 ml of it. YMMV

I’ll be looking to restock in early 2015 and I was thinking about how I’d rank the beers. For me (from fav to least fav):

Fresh Hop Seizoen - must find bottles of this in 2015
Seizoen Bretta
Straffe Drieling
Peche n Brett
Kili Wit
Seizoen
Conversion
Oak Aged Bretta - I have not enjoyed this as much as I’d expect, but I want to buy a bottle or two to see if aging them changes my mind
Far West Vlaming
Cerasus

Word on the street is Logsdon is done but I can’t find any press on it. Anyone know what’s going on?

I have a '13 sitting in my cellar still, but the last one I tried, in fall of '13 was overwhelmingly bretty. I’ll have to try that last bottle sometime, though here in the Midwest its not really saison weather in the foreseeable future.

Had not heard that, but the recent Cl osing of the visitor’s center at the brewery was odd and could have been a signal things are winding down.

I really hope it’s not true. If it is, then need to buy up a lot of their beers.

Scott, thanks. I have to find the fresh hop seizon as well.

Michael, the '13 was too bretty early on but I had two great bottles in the summer of '14. However the '14 edition is better balanced I feel.

This years Dupont Avec les Bons Voeux is at my local Costco. I emptied my cellar last year so I grabbed a few to tuck away.

Jason

That’s funny. I’ll try my lone remaining bottle of '13 but it will probably be in the spring. I passed on '14 after finding that the '13 didn’t hold well.

Not a Saison but I have three bottles of Boulevard’s Love Child '14, which is very good, and just bought two bottles of their '14 Bourbon Barrel Russian Imperial Stout, which is good stuff in an OTT stout style. Great beer to sip by a fire.

That would be very unfortunate if Logsdon is about to be no more … :frowning:
