Monroy Wines - Adolfo and Nohelia
We’ll keep this going through the weekend!
We make cool climate cabernet sauvignon, done only via rolling barrel fermentation. I open, close, and roll my own barrels. It’s great for the biceps, but not good for the aesthetics of my barrels.
My wine background started with bootlegging in Saudi Arabia, but I’ve since gone legitimate. I spent four years as the enologist and assistant winemaker at Eisele Vineyard, with two years each under the Araujo’s and Chateau Latour, followed by stints at Checkerboard, Pahlmeyer, and now as the associate winemaker at Benovia in the Russian River. Benovia taught me how to make nuanced pinot noir, and that winemaking style mixed with my base in high-end cabernet houses led to Monroy Wines.

The Wines:
2018 Monroy Cabernet Sauvignon Chalk Hill (ABV 14.1)
Our inaugural vintage, harvested over two picks placed two weeks apart from a vineyard block at 600’ of elevation in Chalk Hill. No adjustments made to the must, and the wines spent 20 months in 60% new oak with no filtering or fining before bottling. Intensely aromatic with lavender, cedar, and savory herbs, it gives way to a core of blue fruit sweetness with lively acidity and a fine tannic structure.
Multiple gold medal winner, called ‘an ideal example of cool-climate cabernet sauvignon’ by the judges of the 2021 Harvest Terroir Challenge, “where elegance and finesse shine through,” by Wine Spectrum, and an ACME Fine Wines selection for their Big Kahuna club “…more Pauillac than Napa”, this is a beautiful and versatile wine for multiple course dinners. Finish it before dessert though, as it doesn’t show great with sweet foods.
2019 Monroy Cabernet Sauvignon Chalk Hill (ABV 14.1)
My second year with the same vineyard and rows, this time picked all at once. Swapped out Taransaud barrels for Ana Selection to augment the sweetness in the midpalate, but fermented and aged in the same fashion as the 2018. More floral expression in the nose, especially rose petal and lavender, and a harmonious integration of nervy acidity with fine tannins and an understated dark fruit sweetness. I expect this wine to follow in the tracks of the 2018 and be at a pop-and-pour stage in early 2023, but in the meantime I suggest aggressive and long decants. Like a two-day decant at least if you open it now. Neither of these wines is in danger of falling apart quickly.
