Grosgrain (prounced grow-grain) is a textile with parallel lines that reminds us of the pattern of vineyard rows, and you’ll find that pattern on most of our labels, which are designed by my wife Kelly, a former fashion designer.

We’ve recently begun to release wines from our organically-farmed estate Grosgrain Vineyard, located on a basalt ridge in the Southern hillsides of the Walla Walla Valley and they are some of our best wines yet. We’re still sourcing from a range of our other favorite vineyards throughout the region and you’ll find a mix of many of these great sites represented in the offers below.

Cab vs. Syrah Pack

The Walla Walla Valley is perhaps best known for Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. At Grosgrain we work with over 20 different varieties, many of them not quite so common, but we like to put our own food-friendly spin on Walla Walla’s signature grapes as well.

The two Syrah-based blends explore some of the most distinctive terroirs of the region with the Stonewashed coming from the low-elevation Rocks District and the Immersion coming from the basalt-influenced higher elevations of SeVein, while the Bordeaux-inspired wines highlight the terroir of our 1400’ elevation hillside estate.

As for the Grenaches:

French Creek is down near the Yakima River (800’ elevation) and one of the cooler climate sites that we work with. It is always one of the last of the dozen or so Grenache vineyards that we work with to be harvested each year. It tends to produce a transparent, delicate and finessed style with light tannin and forward fresh red fruit aromatics. French Creek tends to show well early and the 2023 in this offer is no exception.

Kenny Hill on the other hand is a higher elevation site in the Mill Creek area of the Walla Walla Valley, which is in the foothills of the Blue Mountains at about 1500’ elevation. This is one of the few areas in Eastern Washington that you can dry farm due to the rain shadow effect of the Blues. It is windier at those elevations, with shallower soils and the Grenache here tends to be darker in color, darker in the fruit profile, and more structured, with the highest acidity of any of our Grenache sites as well as a more textural tannin profile. While more structured, this is still an elegant wine, which is always our goal with Grenache. This 2022 vintage is just starting to hit its stride.

Les Collines is also in the foothills of the Blue Mountains, but about 10 minutes South of Kenny Hill, where the grade is a bit more gradual (1300’). The vines here are gobelet/bush trained and the tannin/acid profile is similar to Kenny Hill, but aromas are more red fruited and with more of herbal/garrigue-type influence. This 2023 is just starting to open up and should have a long life ahead.

The 2021 Walla Walla Grenache comes from the warmest vintage on record in Washington and we blended two very different vineyards to make a balanced wine in those scorching conditions. Los Rocosos (71%) is a site at the Western border of the Rocks AVA on Oregon side of the Walla Walla Valley, where the “Rocks Funk” is much more subtle than in the heart of the Rocks where Cayuse’s Vineyards are located, resulting in a savory character that is balanced by fruit-driven aromas that can be scarce in some Rocks wines. The vineyard is farmed organically and has larger, wilder canopies, which aren’t always a benefit, but they certainly were in 2021, giving us a very fresh red-fruited profile with refreshing acidity (also not always the case with Rocks wines). The balance of the wine comes from Seven Hills Vineyard (29%), a well-known site on the border of the Rocks district, but just uphill placing it in the more general Walla Walla Valley AVA and with a more mineral than meaty kind of savory profile. This is a site that tends to ripen very quickly and it provided all of the richness and depth of the 2021 vintage, kind of the bass note to round out the symphony.

We do infusion-style gentle macerations on all of the Grenaches, age them in neutral oak, mostly puncheons, and bottle the wines unfined and unfiltered so the sites are really allowed to express themselves. This year we’ll release 5 different single vineyard bottlings as well as our Columbia Valley Grenache, which is a blend of several sites.

I guess that was more than a quick thought, but there you go!

I don’t know where I’m gonna put it, but couldn’t pass on a half case of the Petit Grosgrain, as it’s just an incredible bargain. After reading through the descriptions of the grenaches, I decided to add two bottles of the 2023 French Creek to my order as it really sounds up my alley. Probably will drink them alone, as my wife isn’t a fan of grenache, typically. We’ll see. Maybe this will win her over!

I visited last year and while everything poured was fantastic, the grenache, specifically the Kenny Hill, made me a believer. Glad to be able to get some more and try the whole range. The sparkling too… 11/10 recommended! I actually brought the blanc de blanc to a Kobayashi event later that week (at Royal Block) and it held its own with some pretty baller champs.
