Hey all
Headed to Newport next weekend for my girlfriend’s birthday. Looking to find a nice restaurant with a low corkage fee. Also open to recommendations on things to do in general
Newport is charming and has good restaurants. People always mention the White Horse Tavern; I have not been. I liked the Stoneacre Brasserie, but it’s been a few years. No idea about corkage.
In Newport, definitely check out all the Gilded Age Mansions, like The Breakers. Website here: https://www.newportmansions.org/
While the Gilded Age mansions are preposterously ostentatious and amusing, I particularly enjoyed Kingscote, which is an earlier, Gothic Revival house, and the Vernon House, which is a colonial period home that was Rochambeau’s headquarters during the Revolutionary War: Vernon House - Newport Restoration Foundation
Stoneacre has two restaurants, both great quality. Perro Salado is great for Mexican (not wine friendly food most of the time) and has some good cocktails. Along with the other suggestions, the Tennis Hall of Fame, Fort Adam’s or a nice boat tour are possible as well.
I went to the White Horse Tavern many years ago, recall it being a good meal. A few others I’ve been to that are fine is 22 Bowens and if you want some fine dining check out Castle Hill.
My wife and I go to Newport every summer, so if you have any other questions ask away
Best breakfast is corner cafe but expect a wait on weekend. They have free corkage and do dinner. Dinner is good but its very casual / basic food as is stemware. Dinner wouldn’t be at the top of my list but don’t know the corkage situation elsewhere
Best seafood shack is Anthony’s in middletown (get portugese fish chowder) but the newport lobster shack best one downtown (basically a food truck)
My favorite restaurant is Bar C’ino (italian)
Mamma Luisa also good old school italian place
Good places for drink if nice out…Castle hill (highest end option, lunch is good but drinks on the lawn always great, dinner tasting menu not worth the cost), Newport Harbor Hotel (haven’t been since it changed from Gurneys). Can also just bring a bottle of wine to Fort Adams and sit by the water there.
Cocktail bar - bar at the Gardner house - newish…Cool spot.
Guisto - newer - bar and restaurant - on higher end…POnly had apps which were good
best beer bar is pour judgement (pretty good elevated bar food)
the bar at stoneacre (the one next to bar c’ino is nice)
IMO white horse is more for the history (oldest bar in USA) than food
To do besides mansions, cliff walk, walk fort adams, boat tour, sachussettes wildlife park is a great walk on the water (as is 2nd beach right next to it), drive ocean drive (combine with castle hill).
Cliff walk and second beach - concur, both recommended.
If you are going to head to Middletown check out Le Bec Sucre - just get there early as they sell thru quick.
