Ever have a wine to your pleasure, unexpectedly grab you by the teat?

The wife was out for the night and I was cooking smoked elk sausage since she doesnt like it and wanted a big wine to go with the food. I decided Turley since I rarely dig into anything Cali, but I love Zin. Oddly enough I grabbed one of the few bottles of Hayne Petite Syrah I had, this was an '02. Simply, it grabbed me by the teat, and I liked it, a lot. I forgot how beautiful this grape is, I very rarely drink it, for no reason other than I just don’t have any. It didnt change my life or make me want to join a cult that only drinks PSyrah but it was damn good and a real palate blast since I drink mostly Pinot, whites and fizz. It’s really nice to get a pleasant surprise from the cellar at times. Any similar experiences lately?

At times, we can be fully pleased by sensual pleasure alone. Recently for me in a Tres Sabores PS. For me, even a $9 Bogle PS is favorable to an Australian at the same price point, for example Yellowtail. Not sure about teet grabbing… I think the last wine that overwhelmed my assumptions concerning how much pleasure and equally how complex they were, was a 1999 Sebastopol Vineyards Pinot Noir. I had this about six months ago and it was incredibly smooth and still holding-up pretty bright fruit along with nice herbal overtones subtle spice and funk. Big wine.

Nice Johnny Vino! Next time we’re drinking some wine together - I’ll have to crack a bottle of a mid 70’s PS… These older PS and Syrah wines can be very good IMHO! CHEERS and keep and eye out for those twisters (not of the teat variety [tease.gif])- I think your cellar would be a great place to hide if you see one [dance-clap.gif]!

I was thinking the cellar might be a good place if we have another twister of the weather type. It was close enough yesterday to make me think about it Although it would be a death trap in a quake due to the diamond racks. I probably have 5 bottles of PS in the cellar and don’t know a thing about it. It was a ‘hmmm, I’ll drink this I guess’ kind of decision. Any greats made from PS that you know Jon?

Had two similar experiences. One with Petit Sirah from Aaron Jackson at the Boston Wine expo. Killer stuff for really good money. Except for Continuum and a few CDPs, this guy stole the show for me. Other time was with a Domaine Gros Frere et Soeur Cote de Nuit Blanc. Tried it at the end of an industry tasting and was completely floored by the complexity that cut through my purple stained palate.

John- check out Aaron’s PS. It’s quite worthwhile.

The Turley bottles can be a very nice drink - think 10-12++ years old at a min. I have som '97 Hayne PS that I haven’t sampled for a long time - should be great - especially with the Winter weather… CHEERS [highfive.gif]

a 1989 Chapoutier “Chante Aloutte” (Marsanne) recently got me … I’ve posted ad nauseum about it, so will keep it at that.
