Brian,
My wife and I drank this as well for our 5th Anniversary last summer and it was stunning. The best Champagne I’ve had, also. Cheers!
Haven’t had any crazy bottles but some things of recent note that come to mind:
2005 Freeman “Keefer Ranch Vyd” Pinot Noir - a serious 94/95 pt CA Pinot for me.
2007 Sojourn “Gap’s Crown” Vyd Pinot Noir - another 94/95 pt CA Pinot.
Otherwise, probably a 1990 Domaine Daniel Rion et Fils Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts
1900 Marguax and 1845 y’Quem.
Oh wait, does it have to be a wine that I have actually tried?
In no particular order:
1970 Latour
1982 Mouton
1990 Margaux
1999 Bachelet Charmes Chambertin
2001 Truchot Clos de la Roche
2001 Truchot GC Combottes
1990 Trimbach Cuvee Fred VV
2007 Schaffer-Frolich Bockenauer Felseneck Spatlese Gold Cap
2007 JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese
2006 Bouchard Chevalier Montrachet
Many of mine are the same as Howard’s (probably because we drank them at the same time, but in no particular order, the following are at the top of my list:
1982 Mouton
1990 Margaux
1990 Trimbach Cuvee Frederic Emile
2006 Bouchard Chevalier Montrachet
Red: 1990 Montrose (1958 Cappellano Barolo and 1971 Petrus are strong contestants)
White: 1993 Leflaive Chevalier Montrachet
Sticky: 1997 Yquem
Champagne: 1996 Krug
Very easy decision: directly from the barrel, 1863 Krohn Colheita followed closely by 1896 Krohn White Colheita.
The Neal Rosenthal line card.
The Puzelats’ La Tesnière.
The Felsentürmchen Spätlese was interesting - although very primary and not nearly as complex as I was hoping for - I am starting to think that maybe I prefer Donnhoff in the cooler, “off” vintages.
Speaking of which, the basic Donnhoff 2004 Estate Riesling is in a very special place right now - possibly the most profound sub-$20 bottle of wine that I have ever encountered.

Man, I LOVE the 1900 Margaux
Going strictly by Cellar Tracker, my 95+ wines thus far this year:
2001 Château d’Yquem
1999 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Eiswein
2003 Sine Qua Non Li’l E
1980 Mas Amiel Maury Millésimé
2002 Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume
2005 Le Vieux Donjon Châteauneuf-du-Pape
2006 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay
2006 Domaine Ramonet Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Boudriotte
2008 Scholium Project Naucratis Lost Slough Vineyards
95 Rayas that I had last week.
Recently I had the Chardonnay with a Rep from Montelena.
It was so lean and minerally and acidic [and “Wachau”] that my immediate reaction was “mountainside” - but when I asked the guy about the altitude, he said: “20 feet” [and that’s a literal quote].
He went on to explain that their secret is that they don’t do malo.
Why am I not surprised that the Bouchard made your list.
Yep. They are in the minority on this one, but they produce a mighty tasty Chardonnay.
