Hello again, Berserkers! Elkhorn Peak is happy to be back for BD17!
We are an estate-grown Napa Valley micro-winery farming organically in the southern end of the valley since 1983. My dad hand-planted the vines, and I’m second-gen grower and winemaker. Our total annual production is about 800 cases, no distribution, 100% direct.
We are best known for Pinot Noir (in Napa, no less!) and are definitely offering that today, but we also cultivate Cabernet Sauvignon and we have a very special bottle of Cab to share today.
We’re calling it the 2023 Robin Hood Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon and BD17 is the first time we are sharing the story behind this remarkable wine…
2023 was one of those charmed years in the Napa Valley…
An even growing season.
Long hang time.
Balanced ripeness.
The kind of year grape growers quietly hope for, and winemakers get genuinely excited about. Cabernet Sauvignon, in particular, was exceptional.
That year, we sold most of our Cabernet fruit to a high-end producer with a high-end bottle price. Their Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon routinely sells for $150+ a bottle and consistently earns mid to high-90s scores from critics like James Suckling and Jeb Dunnuck praising the wine’s depth, structure, dark fruit, and serious aging potential.
The wine was made under the direction of Kyle Mizuno, a protégé of Aaron Pott, and winemaker widely respected in Napa for his precision, restraint, and deep vineyard intuition.
Over the course of the 2023 season, Kyle became a genuine friend, walking the vineyard with us. Those afternoons were a master class for me, and we were deeply honored to be connected with a producer of that stature.
Harvest came.
The fruit was pristine.
Delivery was flawless.
The wine was vinified and barreled.
And then… nothing.
TLDR: The owner ghosted us, skipped town. The winery foreclosed. We were among a handful of growers who were left with nothing.
By some small miracle, the landlord of the building continued to pay the utilities; the barrel room was temperature controlled at 55 degrees. The wines in barrel were perfectly preserved.
By another small miracle, we got wind that the contents were going up for auction in the summer of 2025. We convinced the landlord to let us inside. The barrels from our vineyard were clearly marked. We charged up the forklift, loaded our vineyard’s barrels into our truck, and slipped away with them in an afternoon that felt straight out of a Robin Hood story.
Most of the wine was sold as bulk to pay bills, but we kept one barrel.
We’re calling it the Robin Hood Reserve, a nod to its improbable origin story, and to a moment where misfortune turned into something unexpectedly special.
And it tastes frickin’ great! Fragrant notes of ripe blueberry, floral violet, and a hint of mineral-driven crushed stone. On the palate dark cocoa and lively red fruit, supported by supple, rounded tannins. This Cabernet Sauvignon leans into a timeless Napa expression of the varietal: silky in texture, refined in character, and elegant.
BD17 is the best price you will ever see on this wine!
We’re offering limited quantities. It disappears after BD17 and the rest we are saving for our wine club.
We hope you’ll check it out, and our other offers of Pinot, Chard, and a really great Pet-Nat.
Thanks for listening to this tale and we’re so excited to share it here first!

Reviews
We’ve had Berserkers review our wines in past Berserker Days (Chardonnay and Pet Nat are total standouts!) And in the spirit of sharing, here are some testimonials we’ve gathered to help you get acquainted with us:
“Due to their location on the rocky slopes and bright sun, this is one of the rare Napa wineries that specializes in Pinot Noir - a refreshing break from the Rutherford Dusty Cabs you will have down in the valley.” -Mike M. (Yelp)
“It’s a small operation but the wines are better than any I have ever had. The Pinot is one of the best wines I have ever had.” Jill V. (Yelp)
“Ken’s passion for what he does is unrivaled. What a great winery in the southern part of Napa (Jameson Canyon). Mainly Pinot Noir. He’s doing everything right.” Don H. (Yelp)
“We absolutely love your Pinot Noir! We love Pinot Noir and there just isn’t another one out there that compares to Elkhorn Peak. Nothing compares…truly!” -Michele & Eric Fort, West Chester, PA
“Props to the old school methods of Elkhorn, the quality seriously shows in their wines.” -Brian B. (Yelp)
“Waited for Ken to grow and bottle Cab for years. First shot out of the barrel (pun intended) he hit it out of the park! A great wine by a great father and daughter team.” -Frank (product review, elkhornpeak.com)
If you’ve made it this far, I’m impressed, and grateful (thank you!) Below is some additional info about us, all of the bolded words are links back to our site. I’ll be here all day, happy to answer questions, chat wine, and do a little shopping of my own.
At its heart, Elkhorn Peak is about connection: to the land, to the wine, and to the people who make it all worthwhile. Our vineyard sits in Jameson Canyon on a south-facing hillside overlooking the San Pablo and San Francisco Bay. We farm organically, and our legacy of crafting exceptional Pinot Noir stretches back to our first commercial wine vintage in 1992.
Whether you’re enjoying an early bottling or something more recent, you’re tasting the ongoing story of our vineyard, one rooted in family, persistence, and a deep respect for this corner of Napa Valley.
If our wines and story resonate with you, we’d love to welcome you into our wine club as well.
Cheers,
Elise
