Great wine, very expensive relative to other German wines. His plot of Scharzhofberg is one of the greatest, most famous vinyards on earth. Romanee-Conti sells at a premium relative to other Red Burgundies, just as Egon Muller’s Scharzhofberg does with German Riesling.
Relative to quality- best QPR on the planet. It is not a question of looking at the price tag, but rather of comparing that price tag to the likes of DRC and Leroy.
Agree with what someone else said about time to maturity. In a world where consumers of the very top end wines are buying for themselves and not for their children and grandchildren as they drink the wines laid down by their fathers and grandfathers the Egon Muller approach can be a difficult sell from a practical standpoint when it comes to the very top end of their range.
I certainly think that was a key driver in the stylistic changes at Chateau Ausone for example. Fortunately the minute quantities of top Muller auction wines preclude the need to make those concessions to market realities.
For me- I have bought the occasional young bottle and enjoyed, and been extremely grateful on those rare occasions when someone brings a several-decades old bottle to table.
Simply one of the world’s greatest wine producers. But understand that the wines are made for very long aging. Other than the current vintage, I don’t think I’ve ever been served a wine less than 20 years old there.
That said, if you are sensitive to price, there is a large number of outstanding Saar producers whose wines are available for considerably less – understand, too, that their styles may be different from Müller’s (Egon doesn’t do dry wines any more and to the extent possible, prefers botrytis in his wines, even at the QbA and Kabinett levels).
Ive not had an aged Egon Muller but was quite blown away by a 2004 Spatlese auction about a year ago. While it would certainly gain complexity with age it was perfect for the moment to say the least.
There is another shoe on the market rife at the moment, which is a new collection of Bettye Muller. These shoes are fast becoming one of the most popular brands, and asks that all addicts of shoes there are a couple of them. Shoes of every individual is unique, and was said to myself-Muller, every couple has their own story.
