Educational Vertical Comparison - Branaire-Ducru vs Brane-Cantenac?

Interesting! I found an offer for 2000 Branaire for $119 I’m considering as well. I may just mix and match BC and BD for the tasting.

I’m currently thinking:

  • 1983 Brane-Cantenac
  • 2000 Branaire-Ducru
  • (2018 Brane-Cantenac if I can swing the added cost)
  • 2019 Branaire-Ducru

Why are you hesitant? 2015 BC is a remarkable wine from a stunning vintage for the Margaux appellation.

Hi Jeff! Definitely no hesitation from a general standpoint, Brane-Cantenac has my full faith!

Only hesitation in the context of this little tasting. 9 years seems like a potentially awkward age to pull a bottle, and I do want my buddy to get a well delivered experience of young vs middle-age vs mature Bordeaux. Using a bottle from 2015, even if it’s a fantastic wine and vintage seems like it could potentially create turbulence in that experience.

Do you have any suggestions as to how that could be smoothed over apart from simply decanting for quite some time? Is my hesitation over using 2015 in this context simply misplaced from your perspective?

Either way, appreciate your input!

2015 will still be fully primary. For middle age you probably need to go back at least another decade, if not two.

Agreed, and that was more or less my point (!) in trying to work out my options.

I was hoping 2010 Branaire would be turning the page, but now that I’ve found 2000 Branaire that seems like a much more definitive choice.

I imagine the 2000 will suit your needs.

Today, wines are meant to be enjoyed at a much younger age. The wine is about to hit 10 years of age. While not fully mature, the tannins are soft, silky and elegant. 2015 is a precocious vintage. The wine tastes and feels great. While not fully mature, it’s a sublime tasting experience now, that will get better from here.

I have not had the 2015 BC but have had the 2016 (about the same age). It certainly was not mature, but is very enjoyable to drink.

Appreciate it. I’ll let you know what happens and how it all turns out. :grinning:

Ugh, would really like to find an easy avenue to getting some 2016 BC, but haven’t seen any apart from online ordering larger quantities.

It’s a good wine to own in large quantities, but there are other vintages just as good.

2016 gets special treatment as my wedding anniversary year.

If I love it and my wife shows at least moderate enjoyment of a producer, it goes on the list. :slightly_smiling_face:
