Eating and Drinking in New York City

I went about a month ago. Showed up at 4:15 on a Saturday and within 10 minutes there were 8 or so people in line. The GM came out around 4:30 and said she had room for 6 and gave the first 6 a resy. Which was a super cool move because we did not have to stand there for another 30 minutes. She also came buy our table and gave us her card and said they always want to try to fit locals in. When they opened the place was immediately packed and is fairly big. The first two pizzas come out immediately and were not as good as a third that was excellent that took 30 minutes or so.

I love NYC in August! So much so that I am almost sad to be heading to France next week. We had the quintessential NYC Sunday. Lunch at King which was all round excellent followed by a doc at Film Forum and walk in light rain! King was just perfect, every dish perfectly composed with simple fresh ingredients. Can’t wait to go back.

As a native New Yorker I find this hilariously awful. It’s a Superfund site and they should never have built residential buildings or schools nearby.

As a resident of the broader neighborhood I actually think the urban renewal is great. The link is paywalled but I’m looking forward to some genuinely good dining options, which have so far lagged the development.

I get the sentiment but as long as you don’t actually fall into the canal is there really a public health issue?

Anyone been to CĂ´te 550? How does it differ from the original? Thx.

I see that @ybarselah’s Bevrly manages their wine program.

Odre closed…sad that it happened so quickly. I enjoyed a meal there after Robert’s recommendation this past freezing winter but never returned.

Such a tough business. Places that aren’t a hit just close quicker than ever to avoid throwing good money after bad.

I live near libertine which “rebranded” into capitaine. Looks like they’re going the same with their super large chateau royale. Now they’re serving…disco fries “au poivre.”

libertine had good food but it was just so damn expensive and if i wanted to spend that kind of money i’d find myself at other places instead

Ate at Bar Oliver last night. Super fun and the hanger steak is excellent. Every seat taken inside and outside. My only nit (and it’s a common one) is that the food came out rapid fire and I was paying the check 45 minutes after being seated. Worked in our favor though as we had plenty of time to walk around the corner and get a nightcap at Lei Wine Bar.

That is a shame. It seemed like a promising place and I had tried to go several times, but then the group steered elsewhere. I guess competition is brutal.

Very sad but not surprising. NYC needs more of this type of restaurant. Where you can go and have a light 3-5 course meal that is exciting for around $50-60. Leave feeling great and wanting to come back for more. Paris does this so well. Had an excellent meal last night at JIP also Korean for 35 Euros. Sadly it is hard to do this profitably in NYC.

Sad to see Saint Urban didn’t make it. We had some good food there and the wine concept was fun

I think the byline says it all there

Dinner last night at Strange Delight was our best yet. The roast oysters with black pepper butter and parmesan and the spare ribs were their usual great selves, while three dishes new to us were amazing: the crab dirty rice (omg), the Mirliton Som Tam (made with Chayote instead of papaya, one of the best som tums I have had in NYC), and an amazing daily special. It was tuna belly tartare mixed with a country ham tonnato, topped with grated 5-month cured egg yolk, and sitting in a tomato kombu broth. Whoa! Served with fried saltine crackers, which are like crack.

So based on this, it seems like one could definitely make Bar Kabawa a full meal? Hoping to get back into Kabawa but not holding my breath, and still haven’t been to the Bar.

You can definitely have a full meal there. The menu is a bit more casual than the main restaurant and usually has at least one special that is a full entree size. The patties are fairly filling.

You can see the menu on their website:

As Robert said, you can definitely do a full meal at Bar Kabawa. I have to say that I’ve often enjoyed our meals there more than our meals in the (also excellent) main restaurant.

Had a last minute meal at Penny this past Saturday night. Our daughter had been there with a friend earlier in the week and was raving about the baked razor clams and we couldn’t get the idea out of our minds. For my tastes, Penny is as good as it gets in NYC. Every single bite feels like something extra has been done to the dish and I often can’t tell what it is. An example, we’ve all had shrimp cocktails…the shrimp in the Ice Box at Penny may be the best version I’ve ever tasted. Another example, I rarely enjoy a low ABV cocktail. I can’t stop thinking about the Penny Martini which is made with a bunch of things, including Sake.

Yellowfin Conserva and Sungolds

Seafood Broken Rice
