Eating and Drinking in New York City

Pork without fat is the other white meat. A friend told me that Jagalchi (Korean super market, about a 15 drive) carries Sakura. That friend has sourced Sakura whole racks and boneless shoulders for a group of us from a market in Berkeley (he gets a discount).

Okiboru House of Tsukemen was very good. Very clean and on the lighter side yet still very flavorful. Can’t wait to to back in Fall with a thermos! #52 of the NY Times top 100!

Up next Schnitzel Sunday at Cove!

I’m very impressed by the pace of working through that 100 list!

Great reviews Robert!

Can’t tell if those last pictures are pork or chicken?

(If you could mention the location, even better for super lazy me).

Thank you for posting this. We keep talking about trying it (two blocks from home) but not following through. Sounds like we need to get there on an upcoming Wednesday.

The last photo is shrimp. It was very good and it is the Lower East Side Location.

I had a big head start. I had dined at roughly 45 of the top 100 when it dropped. I am going to wait until I hit 70 or so before I finalize my own Top 100.

I really enjoyed it and the restaurant week menu is a low risk way of trying it out.

Cove Schnitzel Sunday was everything I hoped it would be. I would be really happy if they do it again. Light menu that took full advantage of their garden. The Schnitzel (pork or zucchini) itself was as actually gluten free which I am told drove even more demand for reservations. It was a packed house. We followed dinner with a night cap at our favorite spot in Manhattan LEI Wine and of course the alley always delivers an interesting experience. We ran into Fab 5 Freddy! And three stunning wines from a few of the best young winemakers in Germany!

No one asked, but here’s a few bites on a couple meals during a quick trip to NYC to my daughter this weekend (I was not phishing).

Naro for lunch on Friday due to location. Was just ok. I was still getting my wits about me after the epic dinner in Philly with S&J, I was a bit hungover and not in top form. The Amberjack, potato, and wagyu grilled cheese were fun The weather was beautiful, we sat outside. It was fine. Also, in news that is not sexy, we had some good pasta and small bites Friday night at Bicchiere, a tiny new wine/pasta bar on the UES.

Saturday night we had dinner at Theodora in Brooklyn. Again, weather was spectacular and we walked around Williamsburg and drinks outside on the roof at Laser Wolf which was just beautiful on Sat afternoon. Theodora was excellent across the board. We were four people and did around 10 dishes and a few desserts. Highlights were the sourdough and whipped ricootta. hiramasa, the melon and tomato salad with feta foam and jalapeno oil, the swordfish belly, and the whole trout. There weren’t really any misses.

Cozy room, a lot of young and pretty people (I guess I’m getting old as I felt that way about all of Brooklyn), good service, including taking good care of the Comtes I brought in. I will say, the wine list is not my jam -it leans natural, small producer, etc- and too expensive for what is-imo- so I’d probably only ever bring wine in at $50 corkage. Though, we did order a couple wines by glass after the champagne.

Thanks for the write ups. I need to get back to Theodora.

Great article / interview on Atoboy. A really important restaurant over the last 10 years. Interesting observations on the difference between NYC and LA.

Good to see Okiboru still cranking it out with the good stuff, although I’m not as enthusiastic with my last meal about 1 1/2 years ago, the lines that form outside starting late-morning is quite a sight.
I will look to re-visit soon.

No line this time but it did fill up very fast!

The hiramasa is insanely good!

Loved it. The whole butterflied trout (no pic above) was also a revelation. Super thin and crispy skin just kissed with wood smoke. I’d eat that every day.

Not sure what the observer’s age has to do with identifying the young pretty set. I’m quite sure that those who fit those terms are also able to notice their kind!

More my realiziation that 90% of the people on the streets in Williamsburg on a sunny Saturday afternoon looked like they were half my age (and I’m not that old!).

Impressive nonetheless - you just prepared well. Whenever I might head to NY your top 100 (perhaps updated a few times by then) will be my selection list.
