Had a last (perhaps penultimate) meal at Chez Napoleon last night. The canard a l’orange holds up. Also just saw that Shuko is closing next week.
Bummer Chez Napoleon are closing. I loved Shuko and had many great meals there. I stopped going years ago because it was impossible to get in and I did not want to text the Chefs every time.
Wondering if over the past year it was still impossible to get into Shuko?
I could be totally wrong about this, but it feels like restaurants play a dangerous game of holding back reservations for regulars and VIP’s. That works until it doesn’t and at that point it’s too late.
It is a delicate balance. I think you need to be either small like Four Horsement or very big like Cocadoq.
Haven’t been in a while but Mille-feuille on LaGuardia used to have fantastic croissants
We live across the street and there are much better places for croissants these days.
But, the cool thing about Mille-Feuille is their baking classes. Last year my son took a croissant class with them and has made them several times at home since, refining his approach each time, much to our delight.
Modern still doing great lunch. Very wine friendly.
Lovely two star review in the New York Times for Odre. Just remember you heard it here first.
Had a fantastic dining experience at Atera last night. I typically don’t venture out of midtown, but I have good memories of Atera many many years ago, so decided to take the 30 minute Uber ride. Every dish was excellent. Service was fantastic. Love the atmosphere (with the music). Will definitely be back and not so long between visits next time.
Glad you enjoyed your meal. I would suggest that getting out of midtown more often will pay benefits.
Speaking of midtown, we had a very decent meal the other day at 53, the Altamarea Group’s fancy pan-Asian spot by MoMA. Tasty razor clams and a very nice cod donabe dish stood out. And it’s on inKind. Pretty good option in the area if you’re in that mood.
Why not take the subway? It’s a straight shot from midtown, cheap, and faster.
I will say that now that NYC installed those card readers that take Apple Pay it’s the easiest subway system in the world to pay for, it’s a nice change from needing the metro card.
London is the same, but basically agree.
Will definitely do that more. The more recent out of midtown restaurants I went to have both been worthwhile (Chef’s Table and Four Horsemen).
Because I’ve never taken a subway in NYC. I will definitely look into it next time I am in NY.
I hear you loud and clear. Most of the time that we’ve been in Europe we end up walking or ubering because it’s just easier to understand and I need to make an effort to be better at taking advantage of mass transportation outside of NYC. That said, the NYC subway is very easy and incredibly efficient. Much more so than uber or taxi.
Yeah it’s very easy to take and very efficient. Safety concerns are also overblown.
Aren’t most of the interesting New York restaurants outside of Midtown now?
Tough audience.
