Heading to Daniel tonight for a birthday. Been a long time. Any recs? How’s the list these days?
How was it?
Fantastic well deserved review of LEI Wine:
https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/06/dining/restaurant-review-lei.html
You did hear it here first!
The same and different as expected.
The bev folks (Erin and Lara) are excellent and so on their games.
The wine list has breath, depth, unicorns, and value under $200. It’s impressive. The OR, Alsace, German, and Beaujolais sections particularly stood out to me and were where I turned (dinning companions are casual drinkers).
The space is big and fancy. There was a very nice bar area and I’d go back there for smaller bites, great service, and good drinks.
The food is totally correct, but not moving or memorable. Which I don’t like saying, but is kinda the word on the street and was case for our meal.
That matches my experience a few months back. The wine was the most enjoyable part of our dinner.
finally tried chrissys pizza tonight after an event with kid in greenpoint. easily ordered online and my pie was ready in 30-35 minutes (ordered at 4pm Saturday).
chris was super kind to my son who wanted to come in with me. we both love his band warthog. we ate the pie while driving back to manhattan and was very impressed. its the perfect nyc trad slice…just with the perfect dough.
while i wouldnt go crazy for it, its certainly on my top pizza list whenever im in the area. $32 including tip for plain.
Oh my gosh. This looks like the PERFECT pizza to me. It’s everything I would want in a pizza. Has that DEEP color, char, not too big a crust, crispy, bubbly. Mamma mia!! Nails what the Beagle Brothers must have been eating in Duck Tales long ago. Too bad I am gluten free, dairy free and probably nightshades will kill me too - or I’d be driving there ASAP.
It is clear you really liked it. Just curious which Pizza to you like more in NYC. My overall favorite is Una but it is a different style. For NYC style Pizza Chrissys is by far my favorite.
my pizza rankings are skewed more towards where we eat with my son vs where i would go exclusively on my own.
lately off the top of my head: l’industrie (christopher street), joe and pat’s (inside only…no delivery), emmetts (both locations), probably chrissys goes here now, f&f in carroll gardens (their clam pie), and maybe leo which ive always been pleased with.
back in the day, frannys was our favorite but thats long gone.
I moved 5 mins from F&F, extra cardio has been required. The wine list at their restaurant next door is surprisingly good.
So important. That delightfully crisp crust turns to mush if it goes into a box hot
Would appreciate a rec for breakfast near NYU. [I’ve searched the forum but can’t seem to hit on anything; probably my fault for poor searches]. Will be there next month with our teenagers. Thanks in advance.
Sadelle’s may not be the qualitative equivalent of R&D, but it is much closer to NYU. I’ve not been there in several years.
Thanks!
Sadelle’s is certainly closer than R&D, and does quite the brunch business.
If you want some of the more viral bagels, Apollo has locations just to the east and just to the west of NYU: https://apollobagels.com/
Also, don’t forget Pop Up Bagels, the Thompson street location still seems very busy, but that’s where you’ll be. (Whereas their UES location is empty)
Also, not sure how much you love Danny Meyer, but you could probably do a lot worse than Daily Provisions, and the Bedford/Downing Street location is near NYU
You kids will absolutely love Win Son Bakery.
Awesome, thanks so much!
some other ideas: kerbers farm (casual), croft alley, ediths (casual), lafayette.
Thanks!
