Eating and Drinking in New York City

Needed a restaurant for a business lunch in the West Village. I originally had planned on King but they are only open on the weekend. Ended up at Little Owl which I have not been to for many years. It was great. I would go back. I know today is a holiday but wow every restaurant in the West Village that was open was absolutely packed!

Re pre thester

Sakura great but doesn’t serve until 5:30, curtain is 7, and it’s over on 3rd ave.

Sozai’s menu is appealing and right in the theater district, and first seating is 4:30

Already booked at Naro for one of the nights.

NARO is awesome, I’ve been so many times because I work around the corner. Great cocktails and food but even better dessert. Portions are on the smaller side so you can definitely do appetizer, main and dessert!
Corkage is free on Sundays and I think $50 otherwise.

Naro is a great option.

My wife will be excited for NATO as there are plenty of vegetarian options and we are visiting Korea in the fall.

There is a somewhat quiet resurgence of french cuisine in NYC. I have to admit although I love traditional french cuisine I find some of the dishes to be too heavy for me. I am curious to see what is going on so I decided to try a few dishes at the Bar at newly opened La ChĂȘne from Chef Alexia DuchĂȘne and here husband Ronan. We absolutely loved it. The tarragon sauce that accompanied the Green beans beignets was absolutely delicious. The beans were more a rif on beignets and were closer to tempura. The riveting Crab Thermidor was flawlessly executed (it was ok with us but is very small). Extensive wine list with a deep Burgundy section that is fairly priced. It was much lighter that I would have thought. We can’t wait to go back.

I’m going next week. Was the wine list picked over?

Not at all. We had a 2014 Jouan. Echezaux for $250.

50% of the list is from a consigner who is a major Burgundy collector.

Post Le ChĂȘne we hit Lords for one of the best Chicken dishes in NYC

Oh my!

The skin is so crispy and perfect.

You know how I feel about crispy skin!

That chicken looks great!

I would even go so far as to say the pictures don’t do it justice. The overall menu at Lord’s is great. Those are sourdough balls. And the wine list is diverse, natural leaning, but some classics and for NYC fairly priced.

Really excited for Olmo in Bed-Stuy. Chef worked at Atomix, Cosme and Eleven Madison. Will report back once I get there! Bed-Stuy is really poppin!

Quick trip. Great meal/people etc at Noreetuh last night. Chrissy’s pizza on Thursday. It’s very good. They take it seriously- you can tell. No one told me there were no tables or anything- lucky we got a sport on the counter to scarf down our pie

I waited it out to see if I could snag a reservation at Ikumi, and I thought it would be easy since every day leading up to the 5th of July is still available. The 5th of July was fully booked when it was opened up, and early this AM, but that’s showbiz baby :joy:. I was under the impression people left town for the holiday, but I guess it doesn’t take much to book a restaurant like this. I’ll probably reserve Mumi unless I come across another option.

As for Maaser, I’ve hemmed and hawed over mentioning, but to be honest, I’m a bit scared of the photos I’ve seen from meals there with the sushi loaded with what looks to me to be excessive toppings. I’m worried I might not love the style, but it’s possible I just don’t have a frame of reference, and it’s certain I’m overanalyzing things.

I was just there Saturday and it was a great time, food is very good if not great and while I am no expert, our Sake selections made by George were fantastic. It might be a little loud for some, but they were playing a great selection of hard bop into modal so I was happy./

Something I noticed last week was a kind of “Chez Panisse” vibe at a couple of places we really liked. Went to Borgo twice, it was so great to see Lee working the floor again, spreading joy in her wake and also Andrew (it’s maybe been a dozen years, time flies). Also noticed the same thing at Sailor. Both menus were inflected with vibrant, fresh vegetable flavors that really reminded me of the 1990s in the Bay Area. I wonder if that was just weird luck on our part or if this is a bigger thing.

I didn’t notice if anyone responded re Aldo’s. Definitely an excellent pre-theater choice. Quick service, good small plates.

Other neighborhood ideas are Bar Room at the Modern, Bar Centrale, Chalong, Benoit.
