Understood - but due to the poor showing at Guerilla Tacos, we figured why take the chance for more mediocre food given the ‘chef’ who started Guerilla Tacos has a new venture.
I’ve seen several of these “Gotta visit in LA” casts, but there are some GREAT spots in this one.
Golden Deli is legendary for some of the best Vietnamese food north of OC, and their spring rolls in particular (all pork rather than pork + shrimp) are amazing, bubbly and delicious. It’s worth a trek, for sure.
Zam Zam is now in Hawthorne, but also worth a trek. They used be very close to me down the block from the Culver City mosque, in a different format. Biryani was the main event, seekh kebab usually available plus whatever else they cooked either coming out fresh or from a steam table. No menu at all. Fantastic stuff, and a ton of food. They cater to halal Muslim customers, so I don’t think they’d allow alcohol, but you could check. I could see how whites would seriously rock with this food.
Empanada’s Place is close to me and definitely where I’d go for empanadas, but we don’t really have empanadas on the brain so often. This place has been there for many, many years.
Still meaning to get to Sahags and Sapp is a legend for boat noodles but have not been.
Thanks, @Adam_Frisch for this - others should take note if in or visiting LA and willing to drive some, these are gem spots.
Nice, was wondering if/when that would happen!
My wife and I ventured behind the Orange Curtain on Saturday to see a performance at the South Coast Repertory and ate dinner after at Taco Maria. Loved it.
great spot
Finally made it to Anjak and it was all that people have promised. My wife said it was one of the 5 best meals she’s had in L.A. Great wine list, too. We had a Clemens Busch Marienburg Fahrlay-Terrassen that I felt like a genius for ordering.
What! You just made it there and you live in LA. Crazy.
I love that place so much.
Had another excellet meal at Majordomo. The wine list has finally been invigorated and the new somm is very cool. Just love the hospitality there.
There is some serious Rhône on that list.
behind the orange curtain? …hmmm…
We had an incredible meal at Yess. I was really impressed with the entire experience. The wine list is small but we had two excellent Sakes and corkage is $50. We have some mutual friends so we definitely had a super VIP experience and the chef did an Omakase for us. The space is beautiful. I can’t wait to go back.
I will try to post photos.
Sad to say that Augustine burned down (or at least part of it did). Fortunately, no one was physically hurt, but it’s sad to see such devastation to such an important part of LA’s wine scene.

This is horrible. So sorry to see this.

Went to Brother’s Sushi (Woodland Hills) again last night. I’ve been quite a few times over the years, but I feel like it might have been better than ever last night. Food and staff firing on all cylinders.
If anyone happens to be in LA this weekend. I will be at the Rappcats Jazz vinyl popup with my new wines and the new Skinny Pablo record. There will be lots of other wines to try including some old Chablis from Mike D’s cellar and some more rieslings. 12-5.
Mike D’s come a long way from brass monkey to aged Chablis! These Rapcats + Riesling Studies are always fun, so I’m going to try to make it before some other plans later in the afternoon.
Another wonderful eating weekend in LA. Holbox for lunch on Friday, tuna collar was excellent, Kinn for dinner another fantastic meal. Destroyer on Saturday morning, big revamp to the menu with many new dishes - consistently my favorite food in LA and BOOM our second dinner at Yess! Just mindblowingly great! Batting clean up will be Damian before heading the airport.
I did a post on the current LA food because I think it needs to be more well known even amongst locals!
Well that would have been a nice thing for us to do on the weekend! Next time, I hope!
Walked past Destroyer a couple times today - I’m always wondering how many Berserkers are hanging out there!
Also had lunch there last week. The new mushroom dish was very good and nicely composed but I wish it had twice as many mushrooms. I need an excuse to try the new tart also.
As a naif about SGV, I’m curious: how well does Eater’s list hold up?
