Prettttty authentic
OK, I stand corrected, I never really thought of them as authentic perhaps because of the massive expansion. They are good, don’t get me wrong.
My newest love affair, Vin Folk in Hermosa Beach. The employees own and operate collectively. Line cooks also work as servers. The food, service and ambiance are top notch. $40 corkage, gassel stems.
1000%
Had another outstanding meal at Baroo last evening. It has been 2-3 months since our last visit and the menu has changed a bit. Wine list is deeper and growing.
My spouse and I went here last night and we both thought it was excellent. We ordered the grilled cabbage, grilled carrots, smoked half chicken, and the rockfish catch of the day. Fish and chicken we agreed were excellent. Carrots very good (carrots really seem to be having a moment in L.A. right now). Cabbage was excellent imo, and very good in Ash’s opinion. We brought a 2014 Leoville Barton (boy, is that a good one!) and a suprisingly-mature tasting 2016 Valentin Zusslin - Clos Liebenberg Riesling. $40 corkage now, and we were charged for both. Friendly service. Love the vibe. Despite generally hating outdoor dining, we loved this place and will return.
Great to hear it is still going and very good.
Sadly, no owner or manager was around when we were leaving, so I was unable to express our enthusiasm and gratitude directly to any of them, but hopefully at least one of the two servers I spoke with follow through on their promise to pass the message along.
Any suggestions on relatively affordable restaurants in Santa Monica or Venice? Taking 6 people out to dinner and really don’t want a four figure bill. Corkage is preferred but I’m fine buying reasonably priced wine or cocktails.
What type(s) of cuisine?
Another spectacular meal at Kojima. Chef is firing on all cylinders. White asparagus on tap!
I would highly recommend booking your reservation this week before it gets difficult after the Michelin announcements next week. hint hint
Honestly, just good food. No real preferences. Pretty diverse and eclectic group.
It does not get much better than RVR. In my top 3 favorite restaurants in LA to return to over and over. If you don’t go crazy with alcohol and/or BYO you could probably get close to your price point.
I need to go!
Josiah Citrin and Hans Rokenwagner are partners in a dive bar cum steakhouse, Dear John’s in Culver City, and Dear Jane’s, more seafood focused, in the Marina. Dear Jane’s may suit you. It can handle 6 easily.
Hatchett Hall in Culver City is very good.
Electric Blue in Mar Vista is excellent, authentic French bistro. Book well in advance; they’ve been slammed since a great LA Times review.
Thanks guys!
i took aaron there - there’s some videos of drunk singing on the stairs with chef and aaron lol
Sounds like Aaron! We had a typical crazy Aaron evening last night!
Not surprised that Baroo did not get a star. Personally I think it is a joke! Michelin just does not understand their type of food. Very happy for Keto, Lielle and others. Also it is too bad Jacaranda was most likely too late for this year.
Restaurant Ki not adding a star is pretty shocking.
