Eating and Drinking in Los Angeles

Taqueria Frontera, which I mentioned above, has opened its new outpost in Silver Lake, which iPhone tells me is 1032 steps from my front door, It is every bit as good as the Cypress Park location but the lines are significantly shorter. I’ve been there a half-dozen times in the last month and it’s never been crowded. Go!

I went to Melisse last month and it was just as excellent as I remembered. Top notch food with perfect execution; outstanding service; and great, intimate atmosphere with a really good sound system to top everything off. We did notice that the wine service and wine list (which is generally horribly/criminally overpriced) is not at the level it was when Matthew Luczy ran things. Still, it’s a wonderful night out.

Landed early last night and made it to Majordomo before closing. I have to say I just don’t know how they do it! It is as great as ever.

For what we wanted it was an absolutely perfect meal. We simply ordered the leaf salad and boiled chicken. The salad was as good as it gets and one order was more than enough for two. It was also a stunning pairing with Feinherb riesling. We really wanted the boiled chicken - out it came with a slightly different presentation in all its glory. The broth was a soothing accompaniment coming off a cross-country flight after a long day in NYC that started at 4:00 a.m.

Despite a lot of staff change the hospitality was off the charts.

Incredibly satisfying meal, the kitchen sent out one dish, we have enough chicken for lunch and broth for breakfast, a bottle of wine and our bill was $220!

They also repriced the list and there are a few cherries. I actually love the list. There are lots of food friendly wines that I really like in the $75-300 zip code and there are lots of great values at the higher end of the list.

Happy to report at 9:30 it was still buzzing.

If you want a reasonable night out with great food here you go…

Which wine did you get, Robert?

Wish they were open Sundays. Traffic from the 'burbs means 2 hours in and 90 minutes back.
Half that on Sundays.

Stein Himmelreich! One of my favorites.

They are open for lunch and dinner on Sundays. The lunch menu is different and it is super casual. No servers. I really enjoy lunch there with a group and several bottles!

We hit Chainsaw for lunch! The hype is close to real. The star was the passion fruit pie. While excellent I would still give the nod to Destroyer for all day dining.

My bad, I was thinking of Baroo. My wife is a vegetarian.

You could have a very nice vegetarian dinner at Majordomo.

All the bings are vegetarian.

The salads are insane.

All the noodle and rice dishes are vegetarian.

And all the sides are veg.

And you could have the tuna or hamachi.

Thanks!

Did takeout brunch recently at Woon. Really liked the congee & pastries. Have to go back for a few other dishes next time.

Yang’s for brunch was an hour+ wait & well worth it. Ordered all the hits. Roulot Meursault was out but Guffens-Heynen En Crazy is still there. Took a left turn at the last second and picked a bottle of '22 Raveneau Tonnerre. So nice

Went to Max & Helens

confirmed best pancakes/waffles in LA.

Have enjoyed two trips to Homareya in downtown Long Beach. Its a newish izakaya place but is really about a a third each izakaya, sushi and yakitori. Specials moving quickly week to week and are selling out. About half the stuff I tried to order tonight was sold out due to a busy weekend. Very nice sake selections by the glass which I personally love since I prefer not to order in quantity and like with some beer. But that also means I haven’t bothered to ask about corkage.

Dinner over the weekend at Ruen Pair. My old go-to in Thaitown and as good as always. Lot’s of people at 6:30. Our group had a 20-25 min wait. Well worth it. Hit up Bhan Kanom after. Young coconut crepe, pandan custard bun and a few pang chi. No wine, just beer.

Not crazy about the forced beverage pairings…

At least I don’t have to pay for a plane ticket to Japan or Australia!

Not that it’s going to make a difference for me as to whether I go, but does that $1,500.00 per include tip?
