Eating and Drinking in Los Angeles

I think the food at Dunsmoor would go really well with Barolo.

If you want to stay Italian

Osteria Mozza is a great option. In addition to Antico Nuovo, which is perfect for a solo diner as they offer half portions, other options include Marea, Bestia (noisy and lively, great food), Marino (Sal will cook for you), Republique (will likely have Alba white truffles), Funke (possible the best pasta in LA), Rossoblu, Angelini Osteria… I happen to love Etra, but it’s more casual and lively. Lots to consider and LA is a big place, so distance may be a concern.

Wow thanks so much – lots of good options!

Availability and price of corkage might influence your decision.

Had a dinner at Camelia recently. Made the reservation before reading the reviews. Read the reviews before arriving for our reservation. Was worried it wasn’t going to be good before we sat down. Was ultimately pleased. Blown away? No. Pleased? Yes. Rushing to return? No.

A bit expensive for what it was, but I’m noticing that I’m frequently having that opinion these days … maybe my restaurant selections have been hit-and-miss, or maybe prices have increased at a steeper rate than has my tolerance therefore.

The chicken liver mousse toast was awesome, but they’re literally one bite apiece — about the size of a half dollar. The spaghetti bolognese a la Japonaise was also fantastic, and was one of very few dishes that I thought represented good/reasonable value. The duck was good-not-great. French fries were very good, if not a touch too salty (which is really saying something coming from me, seeing as how I have a salt tooth).

Would eat there again if I found myself in the area looking for a place to eat. But not likely to make another reservation and trek across town for the sole purpose of dining here again.

I saw a clip from David Chang yesterday saying that the trend away from alcohol is really making it tough on LA (or I assume all US) restaurants these days. I think that’s something we’ve all seen in the current state of the industry thread but what I thought was more revealing were the comments in which the majority said it’s elevated pricing keeping them away.

Makes perfect sense. If my wages had enjoyed an increase to keep pace with increasing costs of dining out then the increasing dining costs wouldn’t be much of an issue. Unfortunately, that is not the case. I know I’m not alone.

Bills that were $100 are now $150, $200 is now $300. Yes please, I would love a 50% salary increase. Ok, I’ll be reasonable and accept 25%…

Shiiiit, I’d take anything. My wages haven’t increased in almost three years, and three years ago was the first time they’d increased in 7 years!

Any recommendations on a place close to the Geffen theater (right by UCLA medical center in Westwood).

Hopefully very close as I have an 8:00 curtain. Don’t want traffic issues.

We’re living in Westwood while we remodel our home.

Alice Waters’ place in the Hammer, Lulu.
Wolfsglen and Violet Bistro, both on Glendon.

Most every other restaurant caters to students.
Edit: The Boiling Crab does seafood-in-a bag ‘boils’, but no reservations and competition for seating with hordes of students. We haven’t eaten there yet.

Thanks Mark and Greg!

(My malware protector won’t let me look at the HERO menu).

Excellent meal Saturday at Broken Spanish Comedor. I missed Broken Spanish and Comedor fills that void. I was always impressed at the depth of flavor chef gets in his dishes, particularly the sauces. Albondigas, ceviche and camote were great with really nicely balanced flavors. Enchiladas and refried lentils were equally good. Chef definitely isn’t afraid of the heat, so if you’re sensitive to chile heat, be forewarned. Probably the best margarita I’ve had in some time. I can’t wait to return for more.

One last hurrah for the Westside location

For our final night of 2025 in LA we did a bang bang and I am so glad we did! Finally hit Sora Kraft Kitchen. The no wine allowed has kept me away despite a strong desire to attend. Really interesting concept. The Chef has impressive fine dining training from Eleven Madison Park, Per Se and Melisse. He is a true on man show. You order from a kiosk and he brings out the food. Literally the only person who works at the restaurant which is 16 seats. The food which is Turkish is light, fresh composed of ingredients that are in season utilizing all of his fine dining background combined with his Turkish roots.

I insisted that our last LA meal of the year would be at Baroo! Once again we did the veg menu and it was stunning. They have a new wine director and have nicely expanded the wine selection which is all priced more than fairly. Baroo is probably my restaurant of 2025!
