Eating and Drinking in Los Angeles

But if you had to pick one forever cuisine on a deserted island that wouldn’t bore you, the smart choice would be to pick Italian. The diversity in Italian regional cuisine is unsurpassed - it covers almost all styles. It has greek, levantine, asian, french, spanish, northern European in it. I know of no other cuisines with such broad influences.

I definitely see why - spectacular program, wonderful food, so inventive, so complex, great textures. I love how the foods tie in with one another in a familiar style of spice/flavor but are also each so unique. Insane wine list in terms of regional and vintage variety.

Well done, Ryan and gang.

Tried Boston Lobster and their lobster noodles that people flock to. Restaurant is in Rosemead and I was expecting a line of up to an hour, as that’s what I’d been told, but instead we got seated right away. It was a cold Sunday in Jan, so maybe that had something to do with it. But restaurant was full, more or less.

Anyway, I have to say the lobster did live up to the hype - garlicky and delicious. The thicker Cumian-style noodles were also very good. One plate was enough for 3 people. My son said “we should come here everyday” as he licked his fingers, but at about $35/pound (and dish is about 4-5lbs of lobsters), I said " let’s keep it as a treat for special occasions…"

Couple of the other dishes were very good too and you could see other tables really enjoying it. We totally over-ordered.

I’d go again with a bigger party where we can share a lot of plates.

I think that’s key with BL, along with omitting the jalapeno in the noodles, so one can drink pretty much any wine along with it.

Best way to eat King Crab - at Longo seafood

HOT POT STYLE

Has to be pre ordered - they also have a5 wagyu and homemade meat balls that need to be pre ordered.

We did live fish, king crab, live scallops, live geoduck, a plate of pea sprouts, soft tofu and verm, 3 roasted squab.

They wok fried the fish head in a sweet soy. Did a congee with the body of the geoduck. Fried rice with the king crab.

7 people. Total was $230 pp which included tax and a 35% tip.

I finally made it to Ubuntu. It’s a plant based, I believe vegan, restaurant with West African influences. In a nutshell, very good, interesting ingredient combinations, thoughtful & attentive service, beautiful interior. I brought wine, decent stems, wasn’t charged corkage after tasting the server. I will return.

Heading to Anajak for the first time this weekend. Any things that are must-orders?

Riesling! I really like the Haw Muk which is a steamed fish curry custard. Sounds weird but it is so good. And if they have any aged fish. Of course you can never go wrong with fried chicken!

Had a delicious meal during my first experience at Girl & Goat over the weekend. Always a little skeptical of hyped restaurants but this delivered. Ordered Pepita Sourdough, Shrimp Salad, Chickpea Fritters, Grilled Oysters, Broccoli, Pork Belly Noodles, Lamb Shank (they were out of all the goat), and Mango Sticky Rice.

My dinner companion had a nut and finned fish allergy that they handled extremely well given pretty much everything had either one in the dish.

Of everything, Pork Belly was my favorite and I’m not really a fan of Pork Belly. This was just behind Cote NYC. Real melt in the mouth stuff.

Thinking of going to Majordomo for the first time for a 40th birthday party. Is it still worth it or are there better recs these days in the downtown-ish area? It won’t be a long drawn out affair either, as we will be headed out for further activities a bit later.

I love it. I have been going to Momo restaurants since week one of Noodle Bar in 2004 so I always have a great experience. Would love others opinions.

I was extremely disappointed by Majordomo the one time I went. My opinion is definitely in the minority, though.

Love Majordomo. The bigger the group the better. Some of their best dishes are large format (short rib plate).

The wine director, Ryan, is a great dude. He’ll definitely make sure you drink well while you’re there.

My only visit was in December. Our 6 top had a good experience. We opted for the Bo Ssam and bunch of bings and snacks. Couldn’t finish the Fred Flinestone size Bo ssam. The Lime Leaf Daquiri is a great cocktail.

Thanks guys. I just want to make sure they’re still at the top of their game and not phoning it in! None of our group have ever been to one of David Chang’s places. (But next time I’m in NYC I will be closer to one.)

Manzkes and Bicyclette both closing by March 1. Financial losses stated as the reason. Republique apparently not impacted.

republique is a money making machine.

Manzke/Bicylette… not so much. Too bad as manzke had the best cocktails in LA
