DOPs are here! (não tem medo Brasileiros)

We got the first wines in yesterday with DOP (Denominazione di Origine Protetta) instead of DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) as well as some IGP wines that used to be IGT wines. This is a new “rationalized” EEC overlay that is supposed to make everything easier but I am already printing signs to explain it to confused customers. I’m not sure if there is going to be a DOCP, anyone?

The second part of the header refers to the fact that DOPS was the Delegacia de Ordem Política e Social (Delegation for Political and Social Order) during the Brasilian dictatorship in the 60s-70s and you did NOT want them coming to your door. I bet these new wine labels get a rise out of some folks in the Brasilian market…

To all our dear Brasilian members,

No need to worry, false alarm. It was all a joke from Roberto. Carry on as you were.

Muito obrigado!

Jorge, At Vinitaly this year, I heard several somms from São Paolo snickering about this as well.

I would bet that folks from the former East Germany get a brief chill when they see this street name here in LA:
