Wonderful story.
Did the kids try the donkey meat?
I remember a somewhat similar story driving in a wooded hill section of Tuscany. We stopped at a place that looked closed but was in fact open. The owner welcomes us with a bowl of tripe. The kids (ages 8, 10 and 12 at the time) all have a taste. They enjoyed the flavor but had issues with the consistency. Still happy they tried it.
They did. They found it good but a little strong in taste which I think was due to the donkey being old when it was slaughtered but also the braising. We’re of the school that the kids must always try everything (with their mouth not their eyes as we repeat again and again).
Nice to hear.
My kids find the same thing with wild boar. They eat it but tire of the strong flavor.
What delicious (oops) irony, that a wine forum has focused so strongly on the donkey meat, and not on the wines.
Had donkey stew in motovun Croatia, birthplace of Mario Andretti. Earthy rich, liked it. Owner so pleased I ordered it they didn’t charge me .
