Does anybody here buy double mags and larger formats...

One of my girlfriends saw a 5 L. of an Italian red blend in my cellar and wanted the empty bottle after it was drunk. I told her that if we could drink it all in one night, she could have it. Two ladies and myself started about 5pm and only because one switched to beer halfway through the night, we had left only about half a regular bottle (375 mls.) at the end of the night. I drank the remaining wine the next day with lunch. I have a 6 L. still in the cellar and she claims she’s up for another challenge.

Do you happen to have a hot tub?

I used to but now limit myself to buying occasional mags. Just too limited in use for my gatherings where variety is prized more. I also worry abiut the corkage issue.

What’s the corkage fee you charge yourself?

Buy loads of mags - in fact most of my personal purchasing is in magnum. Am kind of getting over the whole ‘loads of different wines in 1 dinner’ thing - much prefer 1 or two wines and watching it evolve over the course of a dinner.

I’ve got a few 3L champagnes and just got some 2011 Chablis in 3L. Otherwise, I do buy a lot of magnums. I prefer them for dinners, even with wine geeks. That’s because the subject of the evening is a dinner with great wine, not a marathon wine tasting.

If it’s a marathon tasting, where there happens to be food, then I understand the comments about more 750s instead of fewer large formats. I just don’t do many of those, because most of the time people aren’t really paying much attention to what they’re drinking, they’re just happy to say they’ve drunk all these various labels.
