Do you save ?

Since many of us collect different types of wines, some special and some just to drink.

Do you save:
Special bottles, labels, corks ?

We have a few bottles that I’ve saved over the years, I take them to a business here in town and have them blackened & waxed so they look new, most of the time they are from a special occasion, etched bottles or large format.

Corks - mounds of them that I keep thinking I will do some project .
It remains to be seen !

Labels - not so much anymore but used to keep them in a leather wine book with notes about the wines .

How about you?

Nope - other than notes here and in cellartracker

I have a bottle of Pat Paulsen 1986 Refrigerator White, which he signed for me when I met him at his winery back in 1987. I’ll never throw that one away.

Carrie: what is “blackened”, and what does it do?

We have a big ol’ pile of corks in a glass carboy kind of thing next to the fireplace… it provides a sobering reminder of how much wine we’ve swilled over the years. Other than that, there are two or three empty “special” bottles lurking around in the back of cabinets. Nothing formal or fancy.

Steve,
they drill a little hole in the punt of the bottle and spray a blackening in so the bottle looks full and then rewax the capsule. Voila ! new looking bottle for display. It just makes it more attractive to keep.

i save corks but I am not that obsessive about it. what ever i remember to not throw away.

My wife has been saving corks for years - she’d talked about doing various things with them, but they just seem to collect in plastic bags right now [wink.gif] .

I’ve got an empty bottle of a 1900 Madeira that I use to house the thermometer for my Whisperkool cooling unit, but other than that, I save nada.

We save corks. The very special ones have their own place. The others are in very large glass vessels in the formal dining and formal living rooms.

We have also saved a few bottles (they won’t get opened). Two (a snagiovese and trebbiano) from one of the hotels I stayed in when I took a baseball team to Italy years ago, and two SJ Sharkies wines - cab and chard.

That’s exactly what we do with our special corks. The glass Vessels are 2 overly huge sized wine glasses (given as gifts) each one stand about 2-3 feet tall and we put the corks in the bowls of the glasses.

Like this?

I have so many damn corks in glass vessels, I can start my own business…

I have about 1/2 dozen bottles that bring back memories. Like my first Ornellaia 1997. It is the wine that made me fall in love with Italy. A 1997 Caymus SS, because I love that wine so much. My first burgundy wine and a couple of others.

Serge absconded with my empty bottle of Margaux 86, but I got the cork. I have another bottle in my cellar, otherwise I would have made Serge hand it over, lol !!

Why in the world would they drill a hole? We’ve done dummy bottles for restaurants, and we just put the paint in the top. [wow.gif]

I’ve seen it done both ways. Don’t ask me !

I am so glad I’m not the only idiot with glass vessels full of corks.

I’m saving corks and I saved the bottles from my 50th birthday…55 Haut Brion, 55 Latour and 55 Smith Woodhouse.

Saved a couple of empties of birth year Port (63).

Saved an empty from 1978 Hillcrest Vineyard PN, as it was the oldest Oregon bottle I’ve opened.

Im only saving a special 2 buck chuck bottle… flirtysmile

Don’t ask. I have OCD for wine labels. I have thousands of them soaked from bottles for years. Now I take photos of bottles instead. It’s a lot easier.

I used to save corks too. I had an large box (like from a range) full of corks. I left it for my ex in the divorce. I figured . . . well nevermind.

I’ve got a little of everything.

What I keep with some regularity is the little metal cap from Champagne.

I’ve been keeping them long enough that I basically have buckets of the little caps…

I save signed bottles. That’s all.
