Hmm, I still think the 98 or 01 Catoir Scheurebes are to blame for any love (however obsessive) of Scheurebe.
I find this argument could also be discussed with certain sauvignon blancs.
As I love Scheurebe, I must also thank the little bastards for my love of VIdal, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Semillon, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Viognier, Fumint, Malvasia, Trebbiano, Boal, Pinot Gris, Huxelrebe, Assyrtiko and Grenache Blanc.
Salil, you have the parasite, that’s the only real explanation!
“infected men like the smell of cat pee—or at least they rank its scent much more favorably than uninfected men do. Displaying the characteristic sex differences that define many Toxo traits, infected women have the reverse response, ranking the scent even more offensive than do women free of the parasite.”
Or at least under-ripe Scheu.
You LOVE Huxelrebe? Are you sure? I’m very much in favor of its complete eradication.
Cheers,
Bill
Scheurebe that has the cat pee element is a no-no for me. Now the ripe stuff (mango, papaya, etc aromas) is amazing.
And I pretty much hate Sauvignon Blanc.
I haven’t had very many. Recent Muller-Catoir and some early 80’s Joseph Phelps are the only two I can remember for certain. Maybe a couple others at tastings. I’ve never had one with a cat pee element. Most lighter stone fruit characters and made in a sweet style.
98 MC Scheurebe! Great stuff. But my love for it goes back to my college days when a German grower (near MC) would give me bottles of the stuff for free or nearly free. Just had to help with the harvest.
Love Scheurebe as well. Don’t love cats, but don’t mind their pee!

Bill, I was quite skeptical about Huxelrebe especially after researching it and finding out what a severely genetically manipulated grape it appears to be but I picked up the Anselmann 2007 Huxelrebe Auslese and am now a convert.
Oddly, same thing happened to me with Scheurebe. I was completely skeptical about it and one taste of the Pfeffingen 2008 Scheurebe Spatlese made me a convert. I’d say I drank the kool-aid in both cases but it’s more appropriate to say I drank the wine. Literally.
Evolutionarily speaking, the effect that Toxoplasma gondii has on rats and mice helps promote the continuation of the organism. Humans who are infected with the parasite is an evolutionary dead end. I don’t buy it.
Maureen,
Are you sure this isn’t really the explanation for why you love to drive me crazy. I am not the one who has owned cats.
Gee, Howard, I didn’t know I have such a profound effect upon you. I’m flattered.
