Do we like Aligoté?

Thank you all for sharing your experience and recommending producers. Last night I opened a bottle of 2014 Bruno Clavelier Bourgogne Aligoté Vieilles Vignes to ponder this all. Here are my notes:

Candied orange peel and lemon zest on the nose. The age is evident. Not highly concentrated at first but it’s well balanced, refreshing, and moderately complex. Concentration got stronger in the decanter. Citrus and pine needles open, followed by a savory turn. The wine is held up by a steely, waxy structure that cuts through the mid palate carrying the transition from citrus to game. The length is medium and the aftertaste herbal, like grapefruit and bay leaf. Super drinkable, probably at or near its peak - drink again in 2026.

91/100

I was glad to see your endorsements for Aligoté, but also agree that other regions might produce better white wines in the $50-100 range. The key here, as with most of Burgundy, might be to keep track of producers. To my palate, Aligoté is super drinkable and I love the acidity. Plus, how could you not love its color?

Sure but one can buy a lot of aligoté from very good producers in the 20-30€ range.

This indeed.

At least this side of the pond it takes real effort to find Aligoté at above 50€. Even PYCM Aligoté was about 40€ the last time I checked, and it was probably half a year ago.

It’s $50 stateside, I’m sure I’m paying $10 for the wax.

we DO like Aligoté! Truly enjoyed a bottle of 2019 Boyer-Martenot Bourgogne-Aligoté tonight, one I’ve been looking forward to trying since purchasing it on BerserkerDay 14 (I think?) from Ansonia. Wonderfully expressive nose jam-packed with flint, sweet apple and white flowers. Mouthfeel is waxy/creamy but with good acid and grip. Have 1/3 of the bottle to check on tomorrow, see how it ‘ages’

So no one should buy his Corton Charlamagne

I tasted the 2007 CC out of barrel in 2008. It seemed he was doing fine👀. I think he has it had consulting help from Lafon.

The bottles that are above are usually allocated

Loving Aligoté at the moment, there’s so many (comparatively) reasonably priced options. Over the weekend I looked at the 2021 and 2022 Paul Pillot Aligotés, and they were lovely. There’s a bit of Pillot reductive signature on opening, Melon, fresh herbs, high acid, and some neutral oak to help add palate weight, width, and roundness.

The 22 is definitely punchier than the 21, and for the better. But they’re both really good Aligotés, and I look forward to picking up more.
