Dinner with Jean-Nicholas Meo of Meo-Camuzet

Attended a very nice event in Bernardsville, NJ, on 2/9. The owner and winemaker at Meo-Camuzet, Jean-Nicolas Meo, presented a few of his 2006 burgundies.

The wines have not yet closed down, so it was a good opportunity to check out the wines. I was lucky enough to sit pretty much directly across from Jean-Nicolas and got the chance to jabber with him. Nice fellow. His pricing? [shock.gif]

Brief impressions on the wines:

Nuit St. Georges, Aux Boudots, 1er Cru - This may have been my favorite wine of the night. I went back to it towards the end, along with the Echezeaux. The price was a little crazy from the retailer putting on the dinner, but Crush in NYC had a better price (almost half) this week. I picked up three bottles. Noticable oak that is not yet integrated, but seems like it will become so. Big, bold flavors of dark fruits with good earthiness. The nose is a bit simple, but that is to be expected I would think at its age. Tremendous length on the finish. The tannins are very supple and not at all rough at this young age.

Vosne Romanee - A very good village wine. More elegant and refined than the Aux Boudots, but also less compelling. More floral on the nose, but still dark fruit oriented. A pleasant spiciness and sweetness along with a lengthy finish.

Vosne Romanee, Les Chaumes, 1er Cru, - Much deeper and complex than the village wine. More notes of earth and spice on the nose. More depth on the palate with gentle earthiness evident. A pretty and well-balanced effort, again with very supple tannins, not biting at all.

Echezeaux, Grand Cru - A little less blackness to the fruit on the nose than the previous wine but still dark, with more apparent floral overtones. Very refined with a more noticable lift to the palate. Great finish. Very classy wine.

Congrats on a very nice evening!

Meo’s wines are like you said big, bold and need time to be amazing…

Great wines but agree the pricing is high [dash1.gif]

Jean Nicolas is an interesting guy. I have had the pleasure of meeting him a few times at the Domaine in Burgundy. Not sure if people realize, but he did study at Wharton and he met his wife while interning at Chandon in California.

As for pricing…it is Burgundy!

He mentioned his time at Penn on Tuesday.

I know it’s burgundy, but the village Vosne R for $95? Ouch! Your price is much better, though. I thought the sub-$100.00 price on the NSG, Aux Boudots, at Crush was high, but reasonable, so part of it was clearly the retailer’s pricing model.
