The duo of Mas restaurants, despite the recent NYTimes acclaim, seems to slip under the radar screens of people during discussions of the great restaurants in NYC. I think these restaurants are sleepers, and deserve to be in the conversation more often. Mas (la grillade) is the slightly more casual outpost, right down the street from the original Mas, which puts a major focus on grilled cuisine. In fact, I believe every savory item on the menu has touched the grill in some capacity, but the kitchen manages to maintain enough creativity that it never comes across as “forced”.
While we had too many courses to recap every dish, I will say this - go, even if it’s just for the grilled oysters with lemon-thyme butter. Simple but so, so good!

2002 A. Margaine Champagne Blanc de Blancs Special Club - France, Champagne (4/16/2012)
Heady, alive mousse. Impressive nose, with freshly diced granny smiths, meyer lemon, and yeasty. The palate is incredibly bright and focused, with citrus and biscuit flavors that practically tap dance across the palate. Lots of tension and depth, which makes me think this should have a long life ahead of it. But it’s so good now, it’s hard to wait. A great special club! -
2009 Domaine Pierre Guillemot Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Serpentières - France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru (4/16/2012)
Popped and poured. Interesting aromatically… red cherry, tilled earth and a touch of oak, but with an odd grilled fish type of smell. Guesses at a flaw, yeast type, dirty glassware, or restaurant-imparted smells were thrown around, though the aroma did subside a bit with air. Quite forward and accessible on the palate, with red cherry fruit up front, framed by good acid and a spice quality on the mid palate that keeps things interesting. Not quite up to Pavelot’s 09 Serpentieres but a very well made wine nonetheless. -
2010 Domaine Abbatucci Ajaccio Faustine - France, Corsica, Ajaccio (4/16/2012)
There are roses that you casually drink this time of year, as a frivolous welcome to the warmer season. This isn’t one of those wines. Light salmon, slightly darker than onion skin, color. Impressive aromatically with great floral and apple character. Medium to full bodied on the palate with impressive length. Long lingering pure strawberry fruit flavor is what makes this so impressive. Fantastic pairing with whole grilled fish.
