Difference between Pio Cesare Barolo Classico & Barolo?

Saw a Pio Cesare Barolo Classico 1958 but haven’t ever seen any others. Anyone know what the difference is, if any?

I’m not 100% certain, but…

I don’t think Classico has any “official” meaning, as it does in Chianti where it is a subregion geographically. Maybe there’s an informal boundary, and the term could mean that grapes came from that unofficial area. It is not a separate DOCG.

You can also find recent vintage wines with “Classico” added to the label–mainly Borgogno, but Prunotto and Oddero have been known to put that word on the label.

That is the standard Pio Cesare Barolo from the late 1950s. DOC was not instituted until a few years later. By 1964, the word “Classico” on the label was replaced with the DOC text.

Thanks - appreciate the help here. [cheers.gif]
