Detert- Why not more chatter?

I joined their list earlier this year when I was talking to some of the members about being on the Macdonald waiting list. I was offered 3 of each. In for each. I have read about them, but never had them myself so I will be excited to taste them.

I also have to say Tom was extremely kind and sent an email when I joined. Very cool and great service. I have heard only good things.

Looks like there’s a bit more CS this year than previous years.

Tom sent me an email after I signed up which said ā€œ For decades we have sold the majority of our grapes to Robert Mondavi winery for their To Kalon Reserve Cabernet. In 2018, we began reserving a small amount of additional grapes from our vineyard for our own wine production in order to satisfy increasing demand.ā€

That’s good to know. I was afraid it might have been fruit from the young vines from their 2015 replant, i’m glad that is not the case.

2 CS & 1 CF for me. My first order with them.

I’m so thankful this forum told me about Detert as I have never heard of them before. There are a lot of good things said about their wine on this forum. I thin k I will go with 2 CF and 2 CS. First order for me as well! I would go 3 and 3 but there is so much wine to buy right now ha.

Ordered 3 cf and 2 CS

I’ve known Ton for 20 years and he is gracious, kind and appreciative of his legacy. I look forward to seeing him soon for new releases of Detert and Dakota Shy.

Just opened one of their 2007 cabs tonight. Poured and let sit in glass for 30 minutes. Still real young. Deep red color and blackberry/ violet nose. No cigar box or lead pencil you might expect in a Napa cab this old. Still a chunk of acid and tannin but plenty of fruit to balance off. I almost wish I would have held in the cellar another 5 years. May add more when I taste rest of the bottle tomorrow.

I opened a 2007 Cab Franc last weekend. Here is my TN:

Dark purple - black color. Scents of blackberry, mocha, minerals, cinnamon spice and a bit of floral lift. Big blackberry fruit. Some ripe fruit tannins and spicy wood tannins on the palate. I think this saw a good bit of oak in it’s elevage. It’s mostly absorbed now. Medium density and length on the finish with a bit of grip. Not at all hot or showing it’s alcohol. Very intense flavor without being unctuous or heavy on the palate. Very nice, great value Tokalon Cabernet.

I’ve been a long time buyer since Detert was mentioned to me by a friend as a under the cover source for good value Napa cab.

very similar experience–read the praise here, joined the list recently… a very welcoming e mail from Tom–then ordered the 3/3 I was allocated. Eager to try and also visit

Bob G, was your note about the Cab Sauvignon or the Cab Franc? If the CS, your note has me beat by a mile.

I know what wine I like, and what I like in a wine, it’s just hard to describe it.

In for 3/3 as well. I’ve already opened two of the 2017 Franc. It’s a really special wine.

My TN is for the 2007 Cab franc as declared in the first line of my post.

In for 3 and three…

Some nice galloni scores released today. 96,96,97

I feel like I’m calling Mike and the Mad Dog to say I’m a long time lurker, first time poster, but based on everyone’s comments here I reached out to Tom to secure an allocation. In for 3 of each of the CF and CS. I have a visit scheduled at Dakota Shy in August as well.

Welcome Brian, ask Tom to bring a Detert wine with a bit of age on it. I remember our tasting at their property and he had the current vintage and an older one of both Franc and CS open.
