DESSERT WINES during the holidays

8 of us had dinner together with some great wines. Saxum, Pax, Selyem, Kistler among them. I also brought a 2004 CA Togni. Super dessert wine, what flavors. going to have to replace that one!

Thanks, Roy. It was your praise of the Ferreira that helped motivate me to seek it out. It was just as good on Day 2!

Thanks,
Ed.

Had the 1997 this year and loved it! 1st dark sweet wine I ever said that about. Killed the 97 Dolce.

An 83 de Fargues (from half bottle) last night was wonderful. Starting to show some age but still a delight.

I love the 1983 de Fargues, a nearly perfectly balanced wine. From 750, I don’t think it would seem fully mature yet and didn’t the last time I had it.

Then again the Climens, Yquem and Rieussec from 1983 have all won me over. The de Fargues from this particular vintage is really close to the quality of the Yquem, although I’ve only had 'em side-by-side just once. I still have at least a bottle (maybe two?) of the Yquem to enjoy later in life, and a slew of the Rieussec. Wish I had more of the de Fargues, but I do have their 1990 which is quite good too.

We popped an old favorite on Christmas Eve, and wowed the non-wino but dessert loving, and Wino/Cigar smoking crowd…The N.V. Viñedo de los Vientos Tannat Alcyone from Uruguay. first had it at a Food and Wines of South America Dinner pairing, and have loved it since then. Chocolate heaven in a bottle that pairs unbelievable with both a Creme Broulet and a cigar…

1989 Suduiraut

If was at the end of a long night mid holidays of partying with relatives who PARTIED…so my recollection is simple - absolutely ready, pretty good complexity with classic sauternes flavors, was terrific with the two Stilton cheeses.

Split a half bottle of 1983 Château Doisy-Daëne with my brother. It was drinking great but time to drink up.

We also had a bottle of the 2003 Taylor Fladgate LBV port that everyone enjoyed.

As our Christmas party was wrapping up, we served a
1983 Château Guiraud which was amazingly youthful both in color and flavors.

Like 2001, 1971 and 1989 … the 1983 vintage for Sauternes and Barsac has never once disappointed me (TCA not withstanding). The 1983 vintage just seems so incredibly well balanced for just about every one I bottle I can remember tasting.

As to the 2003 Taylor’s LBV Port … on my website, that is a fan favorite. Seemingly nearly every person who has tried it, has posted a very positive report … except one individual. [stirthepothal.gif] Glad you liked it Mr. Gilmour.

Glen,

I understand why people fall for the charms of Dolce. And I have always had great respect for the wines of Far Niente, overall.

However, I have NEVER been able to wrap my brain around paying (on avg.) $60 for a 375 of that sticky. I have zero issue paying $500 for a 750 of a fine Madeira once in awhile, but just can never pull the trigger on Dolce at their asking price.

Maybe its just me! [head-bang.gif]
