I stopped in my local Williams-Sonoma store (Frontenec, St. Louis) last night, and they had Riedel Decanters on special. I picked up 2 of the Cornetto and 1 “O” Magnum, wiping out the stock on these models. Apparently they are discontinuing these products at WS. Good hunting!
Coronetto Decanter $54.49
“O” Magnum Decanter $69.49
I haven’t washed the coronetto yet, but I have a great method for all of my other decanters. I roll up a paper towel, and insert it into the decanter with a few inches left outside the decanter, like a wick. Because paper towels are so absorbent, they easily absorb and transfer moisture to the drier area – outside the decanter. They always dry quickly and thoroughly.
When they are dry, I still don’t remove the paper towel. It acts as a barrier, keeping out dust and smells of the cabinet/house. (My wife can’t stand this part!)
Well, I drove around S. Fl. and picked up the two Cornetto’s and a Gift Set (so far) as I called and sweet talked the girls on the phone if they would put it aside for me last night prior to closing, all three stores obliged.
The interesting thing is the two Cornetto’s came from different stores and when I compared them side by side they were not exactly the same with some noticeable differences. I then looked at the tag affixed to each decanter , one was handmade in Dec 06, the other was Apr of 08. I found this to be very interesting and considering they are handmade might explain things. I am wondering if they changed the design somewhere between 06 and 08. Has anyone else experienced this?
I have yet to score an O mag. which I would like to get.
As for cleaning. I use the decanter cleaning brush and Stem Shine from Wine Enthusiast. Works great. I have the hand washing version as well as the one for the diswasher.
I checked my drying stand and the Cornetto’s barely makes it in there. Again, I bought this a few years back at Wine Enthusiast.
Well, off to Serge’s house for Bordeaux night and rib’s! I am sure he will provide colorful commentary afterward the dinner.
(edit’s due to fat fingering the keyboard too many times).
Big thanks to the OP on the heads up. Put one (cornetto) on hold at the Reston, VA location for the wife to pick up. Interestingly, two locations that I called in the Northern VA area indicated that it wasn’t marked down in their systems ($219 regular price).
The smaller “O” decanter is not on sale in New Jersey AFAICT.
I picked up a Coronetto, thanks everyone.
I don’t want to count how many decanters I now own. Probably the prettiest is my Waterford Captain’s decanter. It’s truly impractical, imagine it with a full bottle of wine in it – the amount exposed to oxygen is maybe a silver dollar’s diameter worth, LESS oxygenation than you would get from “recanting” into a clean wine bottle. And it’s a wrist-cracker when you pour. It’s good if your dining room table is pitching and yawing in a storm though.
That is true, I “thought” I had an “O” on hold at one of the WS. I picked up two Cornetto’s at two different stores. my wife went to pick up the “O”. She called me on the phone and said , this is not what you showed me in the photo. What it turned out to be was a very basic decanter from Riedel…and it came with 6 Vinum XL Pinot/Burgundy Glasses!!.. for $38, lol ! I told her to buy it and we can just use the glass decanter to hold used corks, lol. The glasses are beautiful. Retail on it was $159 for set of six and the crappy decanter. What I don’t understand is why such beautiful hand blown crystal glasses are being paired with a plain glass (think gas latern) decanter…very strange, but still scored a good deal.
