2004 Boudreaux Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon
Opened about 30 minutes before gulping it down. I was shocked at how blood red this wine is, not blue/purple at all like Quilceda. Buttloads of red fruit on the nose–pomegranate, cassis, and cherries along with camphor, red licorice, and my favorite of all, sweat. That’s right, sweat. Not in a SEC 300lb. defensive lineman kind of way but in a Megan Fox just ran the treadmill and broke a sweat kind of way. Lush and smooth in the mouth without ever being fleshy. Loaded with red fruits and raspberry liqueur showing great mouth density but never venturing toward excess weight. This wine was so balanced with lip smacking acidity paired with the red fruit sweetness with no signs of tannin, tartness, or oak. It was so suave and polished that I’m surprised the label isn’t in the shape of an Armani tuxedo. Damn good. 95pts.
Great note, although I usually deduct .5 for sweat & I like my fruit of th black variety.
This has been on my radar to try. Thanks.
Nice note Jared. I’ve been a fan of Boudreaux for years and still have one bottle of the 03 cab left. That’s the wine that Gary V. went bananas over.
If you ever get over to Leavenworth be sure to call ahead and make an appointment to stop by the winery for a tasting. Rob Newsom is a great guy and will taste you through all of his wines.
David
David, have you had any of their Reserve Cabs?
Hey Otto, It’s nice to see you here. I think of you every time I see in CellarTracker that I only have 3 bottles of 04 Keever left. Thanks for turning me on to that one.
As far as the Boudreaux Reserve cab goes, I’ve only had the 04 which I enjoyed. Unfortunately I haven’t had the 05 and probably won’t since I’m staying away from $100.00+ wines in these times.
David
Jared,
Thanks for the note. What’s that wine going for?
Hi Phil,
The list for the 05 cab is $50.00 but Pete’s in Bellevue had it for around $42-$44 the last time I looked.
David
Thanks for the kind words David I wish their wines had a larger distribution than just WA, ID, and OR.
Otto
PS Don’t open the remaining 04 Keevers for a couple of years. The wine is going through a weired stage right now.
I’ll have to look for their cabs. I have some of their regular Merlot and the Bacchus and Desert Hills Vineyard Merlot, both have been really tasty.
Wow!
One of the favorite insults in south Louisiana is:
“Your mama’s a Boudreaux and your daddy sells shrimp on the Airline Highway!” I never expected to see the word Boudreaux on a wine label unless it was something made from mayhaws!
From Wikipedia:
Mayhaw is the name given to the fruit of three species of hawthorn that are common in wetlands throughout the southern United States.
Mayhaws grow in moist soil in river and creek bottoms under hardwood trees. The fruit ripens in late April through May, thus the name mayhaw. The fruit is also found in bayous surrounding lakes, such as Caddo Lake on the Texas/Louisiana border. Mayhaws are often collected out of the water from boats to be used to make jelly.
Ah yes my friend, “putting the B in subtle”.
Sounds like a really nice WA cab, do you have any more of these?
