Current state of wine market

At the risk of stirring the pot further, why is so much time and mental energy being spent on discerning the identity of this guy? Did he say something offensive or defamatory? His posts above seem pretty vanilla.

It seems like either he is a restaurant owner or manager like he claims, or he isn’t. What rides on that and why is it worth spending this much mental energy on?

I think there is more backstory. I seem to remember having read about it at one point, but I forgot. Point being I think there is something of at least some level of substance.

There is. I also think people are interested in knowing if a relatively frequent poster is on the level or misrepresenting either what he does or who he is.

Even if he were a busy Chef he could pop on and provide a brief explanation.

I wonder if it’s someone with two handles.

Update?

He’s a long time poster on the board who always has fantasy explanations for anything. When challenged he disappears for several weeks, then eventually returns to tell more tales.

I just spoke with both KY reps after the staff meeting I just attended. Neither has heard of him. Neither has sold wine to a Gordon Fitz. One Googled and Instagrammed and tried to figure out what account could be hours out of Conci that was in KY that he didn’t know about. Zip.

Doesn’t it seem weird that a company with maybe 20 total reps and only 2 for outer-area (away from Cincinnati) Kentucky have no idea who this is or even what accounting could be? Doesn’t it seem weirder that “Gordon” claims to have come to a recent CES tasting with multiple people and there is no evidence from a sign in stand point (and if you know Ann Boucher you know she’s keeping track of everyone) or any recollection from anyone about this attendance?

So, is he making this all up?
Is Gordon Fitz not his real name?
Both?
Or is it some weird failure to recall what would seem to be basic information by a few key people at CES?

Maybe its a way to pay homage to a regional tragedy?

Gordon Fitz and Kaiser Soze both have 10 letters. This isn’t that difficult.

Let us know what you learn from your contacts.

I already did.

I started looking at some of his older posts and the other thing that struck me was that he’s likely in his mid-70’s (if you can believe what he says). He claims to have been an Army Ranger and intimates he was in Vietnam, but the war ended 50 years ago (and combat for US troops started 60 years ago). There’s a post from 2015 where he says he’s a recent retiree. In posts from 15 years ago he claims to have been a manager or executive in some undisclosed field, but it doesn’t seem like the restaurant or hospitability field. If this is all true, it makes him at least 70 and likely more like his mid-70’s. I get that a lot of retired people work for extra income or to keep themselves busy, but restaurant work is long hours, mostly nights and weekends, and requires spending most of your time on your feet. It’s not a field that a lot of 70 year old people go into because it’s physically demanding. I guess he could just be a buyer and not the wine program manager, but that strikes me as odd as well. If you’re operating a fine dining establishment are you going to hire a wine buyer who doesn’t actually work the floor and sell as well? Possible, but again, it seems highly unlikely.

Ahh I missed that

Maybe all those ‘Somm’ movies have made that role look glamorous, and ‘Gordon’ wants to piggy back with fan fiction / LARP ?

Wow

I’m 78, will be retired by the end of June. Except that I will still consult (unpaid) with a few restaurants on their wine lists. I won’t be a somm, I won’t be a buyer, the buyers / somms will ask me about Stuff and sometimes ask me to go to tastings with them, just to bat opinions and thoughts back and forth.

That doesn’t mean Gordon Fitz exists.
