Current Release Burgundy $100-150 - Recs

Inspired my Nathan Smyth’s post that you cant get good red burgundy for uner $100-125. So lets have a list of good or I would hope great burg for $100-150 level. Thanks

Nathan is wrong and you’d be wasting your money spending this much on a bottle from any region until you understand what they offer at the basic level first.

Requests for suggestions of particular Burgundies are also pointless because there are thousands and thousands of Burgundies to choose from, unlike in Bordeaux where there are like 100-200 wines tops that most people are interested in. It is like asking, “Can someone recommend me a good book?” with no further elaboration whatsoever.

Keith is right. You don’t have to spend over $30 to have an interesting wine.

The interesting thing about Burgundy and pricing is that much of the unheralded vintages which needed time to show well is often discounted as the scores were initially low and critics never went back to re-taste. Old stocks in wine shops can have hidden gems. This is where experimenting and just learning can help you greatly.

Also, you can find enjoyable reds from Savigny les Beaune and further south at lower prices. Volnay, Pommard, red Chassagne-Montrachet (one of my favorites is Ramonet), these are excellent wines that you can get for much less than $100.

Agree completely.

As if there were another $50 pinot noir anywhere in the world that you would take over Edmond Vatan’s…

so true - and I used to find real deals in lots of places because I paid attention to what the wines were actually like, instead of relying just on how they’d been reviewed upon release by one or two publications. Those deals are much harder to come by now.

Haven’t tasted Vatan but about a year ago I found 01 Bachelet GC Cazetiers for $50. How is that?

What kind of Burgundies do you like?

Faiveley GC’s. Some of the recent vintages have been expensive but you can still find some 01 Latriciere, Corton, etc for about $100.

Recently encountered in the retail stores in and around Seattle:

2006 Sylvie Esmonin Gevrey Clos St-Jacques 79.00
2006 Bachelet G-C VV 59.00
2005 Chandon des Briailles Iles des Pergelesses 49.00
2005 d’Arlot NSG Clos de Forets 85.00
2007 (might have been 2006) Drouhin Chambolle 1er 80.00
2006 Pavelot Dominode 48.00
2005 Burguet G-C Justice 79.00

I’d be tempted to put any of these in the cellar. If you enjoy the hunt, as I do, you will find stuff.

Cheers,
Doug

the reds

Just picked up 2008 Fourrier Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cherbaudes and 1er Combe Aux Moines for under your budget. Both are generally very good wines.

For great “Burgundy” around $100-$150-- buy 4-6 Lapierre Morgon…
