With all of the recent “enthusiasm” for high end bourbon, it got me thinking how easy it would be to steam off the seal, drink the contents, refill with a combination of cheaper spirits, recap and reglue the seal.
Since it’s a spirit, you wouldn’t have to worry about spoilage from the process.
There are more than enough folks who would not know the flavor profile of Pappy 20 or another hard to get bourbon.
Does this make sense? Am I oversimplifying things?
There is a huge industry of counterfeit spirits, probably even more so than wine. It is usually done in large scale, but with boutique bourbons on the rise, I wouldn’t be surprised to see them pop up.
This was my concern a few months ago when I bought a Pappy 23 at a Major chain retailer and it was a LEAKER ! It went back as soon as I discovered the leak when getting into my car . TOO Bad, but not going to take a chance.
