If anyone is interested, Costco is having a sale for customers in NM, OR and CA. 2005 Leoville Las Cases (100 pts WS) - $199.97, Montrose ($79.97), Figeac ($79.97) and some others. Still not cheap but a lot less than before. I guess the 2006s are on their way.
Cases of good 2005’s here on the shelves in MI. Too bad they arrived just as the market was melting down late last fall. I have never seen a wine-markdown at Costco here in MI, they just let the stuff sit, and sit, and sit, until some poor sop thinks that an older wine must be a better value. (If anyone wants any 2002 Guigal Hermitage for $55, please let me know, there are a few dusty bottles left.)
It’s really too bad, because this sort of poor retailing stops anything new from coming in.
I hope they start trying to sell off the 05s they have on the shelves as well. I am surprised not to see any 06s yet at my local costco. Last year at this time they had a ton and now the 05s are still clogging the shelves.
From what I have come to understand, the '06s will arrive at the end of June/beginning of July in local Costco’s. Clearly, this is much later then last years Bordeaux crop so who knows what effect volume of 05’s/distribution/pricing has come into play.
But - expect the 06’s to arrive shortly and the 05’s to continue moving out.
Oddly enough, I was at my local Costco to pick up some fresh fish about an hour ago (Foster City, Ca). They had bottles of 05 Palmer ($235), 05 Ducru ($168), 05 Bellevue Mondotte ($270). They also had 06 Don Melchor ($58) and 04 Chateau Montelena ($90).
Its rare that this Costco has this level of inventory - might be due to another local Costco undergoing renovation (Redwood City). I do suspect some of it is Costco’s means of clearing them out. Hope to see some ‘.97’ prices coming soon on the shelves. In the meantime, I am gobbling up Costco.com’s inventory.
They actually do blow stuff out here. There have been reports of Dom Perignon for under $30 and I have picked up some $60-$70 wines for $9-$10. I’ve never been given an explanation as to why and when they do markdowns, but they occasionally will do it (never seems to be more than 4-6 bottles of anything and it does appear to be stuff that has been hanging around for 2+ years). That said, they do it so infrequently and at individual stores that you just have to be in the right place at the right time.
